1964 Nats Pictures
« on: August 16, 2019, 05:54:05 PM »
Does anyone know if there is a gallery with pictures from the 1964 Dallas Nats?  PAMPA used to have some but all of that went away with the web site upgrade.

Thanks - ken

It was 64, not 65.  I have been reminded of the failings of your memory when you are bestowed with the title "Old Fart".

Hi Ken:

No one will be able to provide photos of the 1965 Dallas Nats because in 1965 the Nats was in Willow Grove, PA.  ::)

It was in Dallas in 1964. Silhavy won, Rondinelli was second, and Scarinzi was third.

Try 1960 for Dallas NATS also.  There were four locations as the NATS was moved around.  For me 64 was my first Dallas NATS.  Then it was 68 in Olathe Kansas as that was the year I got married.   70 was Chicago with brother and wives along in which we stayed in the camper of my brothers.  Then the AMA  started using different locations after the Navy dropped sponsorship of the NATS.

Nah, Larry.  1959 was at Los Alimitos NAS near Disneyland.  My first ever Nats!

Los Alamitos was my first Nats too, but it was 1963. Still have my competitor's badge.

My 1/2A Viking FF went OOS and was later retrieved by a Navy Sikorsky that searched downwind for lost FF models. Probably cost $10,000 to retrieve the model!

I think that was the year that Larry Scarinzi had his Blue Angel.  Larry outlined his Dallas Nats experience in his Bjue Angel article , Flying Models, Feb 65.

An interesting side story to this 64 Nats, as I understand, is that Dick Mathis had high flight points during the Open Finals flyoff but finished I believe in 5th place due to a low score for appearance points.  His model was the predecessor of the Chizler, was covered and trimmed with jap tissue with clear dope.  I saw this model and thought it was well done.  Evidently, the clear doped tissue covering finish did not impress the appearance judges.

I saw Dick Mathis fly this airplane and was in awe.  It was the first time I had seen the stunt pattern flown that way.

(Please note, I might have the year and actual placing correct, but Dick did have high flight points during the finals at a Nats in that time frame with that clear dope tissue finished Chizler predecessor which I did see in 1964.)

I remember that plane so it very well could have been '64.  It was impressive, actually it was Dick that was impressive.  Between him and Don Still, closest we would ever get to a 5' corner.  What was impressive to me was Larry's Blue Angle.  It was so ..big and blue. He should have won.

Larrys Blue Angel still hangs in his basement. It was never flown again. A total of 17 flights on it! It still looks as if it was built a month ago.

This has gotten a little off topic.  I was able to participate in the Air Force World Wide Model Airplane Championships in 64 (where I first met Dick Mathis - the CD), in 66 (where I first met George Aldrich - the CD) and in 68.  Made the Air Force teams to the 66 and 70 Nats.  (Grad school sort of interfered with any plans for the 68 and 69 Air Force meets.)

That was in the era when the AMA Nats recognized individual Jr, Sr, and Open individual champions, national team champions and club team champions.  To qualify for those different championship categories, each individual had to fly up to 9 events like 3 CL events, 3 FF events, and 3 more of either category.  The National and Club Teams consisted of 5 competitors each.  The Air Force teams were the National Team Champions for a number of years until just before the Navy stopped sponsorship of the Nats.  One of the reasons for the Air Force success was that in addition to the 5 man teams and their combined 45 events being flown was that the Air Force also sent another 5 people as "mechanics" to do the chasing, standing in lines and repairing airplanes.

As a young guy in the Air Force, that was a pretty good deal.  Was on permissive TDY for the week of the Air Force meets, then when I made the Air Force team to the Nats, ended up with 3 weeks of permissive TDY with a small expense allowance to fly model airplanes.  Quite an experience.

Now we know the real reason they stopped sponsoring the Nats!  Nothing rubs the Navy worse than having the Air Force win - anything.  I was in from 68 to 74 but I could never get leave to go.  Too busy keeping F-4's armed to the teeth.
