1/64 plywood
« on: May 03, 2017, 06:09:23 AM »

  Mornin Guy's,
 I am looking for some 1/64" plywood to use for siding on a profile model.  What U S measurement is equivelant to this measurement, and where can I get this plywood?

                Thanks a lot    y1 <= #^ :!

I use 1/64" ply for many things.  It's amazing they can glue up three plys of birch veneer and still come out at only 1/64".

I quit using it not to long ago because of the cost of it but it is great for a profile fuselage skin.

O.k., my smart-a$$ response aside ......

1/64" is real close to .016"

1mm is real close to .040"

So, 1/64" is real close to .4mm

I love the stuff and use a lot of it

One project was a long profile fuselage and sticker shock for 48"x 6" in long piece had me use 3/32 heavily sanded instead....

I won't list all the places I find it...redundant (see above) but by LHS is super proud of even a 12" x 12" piece

I would love to support the guy-- but seriously--- $23 for a square foot?

If my math is right-- rounding--it is about $4.60 per Sq Foot and that is not bad a all compared to any of my LOCAL sources---with taxes and shipping it is about $5.40 per sq foot to me in Texas

my most useful order is 12"x 48" from Tom Morris for about $23+/-  basically $3.40+/- a sq foot

The price of ply seemed to go through the roof 3-4 years ago.  I was told it was because there was only one manufacturer of aircraft ply left.  I have found I can get it pretty cheap at Michaels craft stores.  Downside is it's in smaller sizes,  6"x12" and I think maybe 12"x 24".  Anything thicker than 1/32 is Lite ply though so I still grin and bear it at my LHS for thicker sizes- and use it carefully.  Not sure about the need on a profile fuselage though.  Just use a little harder grade of balsa and you should be fine.  Many of the older kits had wood you could make a baseball bat out of.

This cowling is made from 1/64" ply, with pieces of 3/8" balsa in front.  Much easier than a fiberglass cowling, and lighter.
