I would like to reduce a Twister to 1/2A size for kicks. Using a Cox Black Widowfor power, what weight should I shoot for?

That would be way cool... What wing span would you shoot for? How much would you reduce the plans? Keep us posted on your effort. I might go for one of those as well. Also a 1/2A Banshee would be fun too. Sure do need more planes for the 30+ 1/2A engines I have.

1/2 is about the most fun you can have. That is when the engine starts..

Phil, My 1/2A Brodak Pathfinder weighs 12 1/4 oz (could be a little lighter) but handles the weight well with Norvel .061, 48' lines, ~ 4 sec laps. I think it is the best 1/2A I have flown to date, will be interested in your Twister project. FYI/reference: Pathfinder specs: 35" span, area=236 in2, fuse lgth=27"

I'd shoot for something like the size of a Brodak Baby Clown or Baby Flite Streak. Also check the Pinto (RSM). I think it (Pinto) is made for a TeeDee or bigger, so it (with the flaps) may be too much for a Black Widow. I think the Pinto is smaller than the Pathfinder--but not positive. A Norvel 061 is a lot more power than a Black Widow.

I did a direct scale down to 36 in wing or a TD 049. I'd probably go down to 30 in for a Black Widow. The lighter the better. Under 10 oz, A TD will fly an 11 or 12 oz airplane fine. But with 1/2 A light is really good.

I received the plans for this plane today. It's called a Pirata. From what I read it's a 1956 published plans from Italy. It's 31" wing span 25" length. Plans call for 2 TD type motor but I am going with 2 Black Widows.

This afternoon I made up a 50% copy of the Twister plans. That gives it 24" span and approximately 122 sq in wing area. It looks pretty neat on paper. I think it might be about right for a Black Widow .049. I am keeping the same airfoil and may even try for active flaps if things don't get too heavy. I will adjust the nose moment after I get most of the assembly and finish done, that way I can just chop it off at the right place for balance and slam the engine and mount on last. Sounds like I've got it all figured out, but if I really did, I'd be a millionaire. :P

FYI Pinto is slightly smaller than 1/2A P'finder and Pinto has built up fuselage. REF: Pathfinder (PF) vs Pinto (P)
Span: PF=35", (P) = 34", Lgth: PF=27", P=21, Axx: PF=236in2, P=220 in2 Roger V.

Well, since the Pinto is a shrunken Oriental, then you could have a shrunkem Profile Oriental. ;D

Several years ago we took advantage of scaling. We had the kit Banshee plans reduced to about 60%. Built originally for a TD .049, and finished like the full size Banshee I was flying at the time. Currently it sports a Norvel .061 and flies better then the real one.

You know, Ray, I have been watching these little designs of yours for a couple years now. The more I look at them, the more neat little *tricks* I see and cool ideas.
I like the way you turned a constant chord wing into a taper planforn on the Little Axe, just to site one example. You must really be having fun!! ;)

Phil, this looks like fun. A couple of summers ago I spent time flying a Norvel. 061 powered stunter. It took some tme to get used to it, but it was alot of fun. Good luck with the plane, looks like it will be a good flyer. :D

Here it is in basic white...decorations to follow. Came in at 7.2oz. I used a unique system to achieve balance without adding ballast. After covering, I bullt the engine mount and with engine attached and kept chopping off the nose till I achieved proper balance........very schentific. ;)

Jus weighed it again on s NEXUS scale that I use for balancing engines....7.26oz with the engine mounted..... ;D

That should be a real BLAST to fly! And it should be "pattern capable"! I had a former WC tell me once to fly a 1/2A stunt plane every now and then to sharpen th reflexes. ;D
