09 NATS PICS
« on: July 05, 2009, 08:22:02 PM »
Appearance judging went off today. Many beautiful planes. I ended up with 15 about were I figured.

I'm off to bed. Movies tomorrow.

The pictures in this post are 19 points front row. The rest are just random.

Hi Robert,
Any info on who got what for points? From the pictures I would guess there was no 20 pointer this year.

Thanks Sparky,

Beautiful airplanes, but only Frank McMillan's "Martin Baker" has a cockpit. That kind of detailing is forgotten by all but a few.

Nope, look at the Evolution. Is that Derek Berry's?

These are some pretty good stunt planes.  You are free to fly something different if you think it's better.  I don't see you critics winning.  I don't even see you here.

I get a daily link to the Nats Snooze from AMA. If you can find your way past the R/C Combat and Pylon Racing, there's some Stunt coverage by Allen Brickhaus. Mike Paris won Jr./Sr. Beginner, so he don't have to take no crapola off Grace this year. Way ta go, young man! There's also AP news...4 @ 19 points were the 'front row'. The JCT was represented, of course.  http://www.modelaircraft.org/events/nats/natsnews.aspx

This from the guy who calls my planes

U-ASS-a MING
Shear Picnic
Dr Heckel
TEErection

There are more, but you get the idea.

Plus, I hate shiny clear... it is so lame.  I use semi-gloss myself.  Better yet, I think bare wood would show the structure better.

How did the mini Furias fly?

The Evolution is a great looking plane.  It could be either Derek Berry's, Randy Smith's or Bill Rich's plane.
The near prefection of the the finish leans it toward being Bill Rich's.

That is Derek's very NEW plane.  It has what looks like a whole bucket of very shiny clear on it.  He got 18 because it is awesome. Very detailed, with canopy work as well.  A few tiny panel lines and just the right amount of trim colors to make for a very attractive looking plane.

Shiny clear was not all that got the big points this year.  It seemed to be attention to detail that really worked.  Pretty much the same for every year that I have been there.  And one of those details is a very even shiny finish across the entire plane.  Those with uneven or dull finishes found themselves further back.  There was no intentionally mat finished palnes this year that I saw and I was first in the door after judging was completed.

I waxed my plane and got the clear looking very shiny and buffed.  I managed a whole 14 points.  Many dings and loss of paint in some areas really didnt help much,  <=

Matt, Kenny, PTG, Windy were on the front row at 19 points.

Also, there are many planes here with canopy detail.  More than I remember in past nats.  It seems to come and go.  It is not a needed detail when flying the plane and if not properly executed can count against you in app.  If you want canopy detail just check out recent RC stuff at their scale meets. Working dash lights, pilots who turn their heads with the direction of the rudder, and so on.

The planes here are nice.  Many are better than I can complete.  There are quite a few with different design ideas and numbers and such.  Pics always make them look similar.

Anyway, it has been a blast so far.  The top 20 has been set and flying starts at 8 am.  I dont have all the names so I wont list as I dont want to get any wrong or leave any out.  I made it in.

I should be clear (pun intended), I think the planes at the Nats are top drawer. I give Howard a hard time because somebody has to to keep his head from swelling too much, but Howard's plane is also a very, very nice piece. I'm am, as always, impressed by the overall quality and just drop dead gorgeous of top competitor's planes.

Go get up, Doug!

Howard,

Well, we all need to be brought down to earth occasionally.  (there's probably a JCT rhyme in there somewhere). Maybe you need to practice out at the Narrows Turbulence Generator.  :)
