KidVenture and MA Nov2010
« on: October 23, 2010, 09:11:21 AM »
I sent this in to MA and they did not use it.  That is OK, their copy was fine, but  I am posting it here anyway.  Why waste it.....   The AMA photo guy even took a flight.

One funny thing.  The RC guys put their windsock inside the safey circle ( yes there was a border they stepped over), and a pilot practicing for the airshow on a borrowed airplane ended up with a one wing flite streak.....  ;D.  The RC guys did not applolgise or offer to replace the airplane.   if you did something like that at an RC field.... you would be asked to get out your checkbook.

Begin copy.......

Control line model aviation celebrated 19 years at the 2010 EAA KidVenture, the child-friendly education portion of EAA AirVenture which endeavors to get new young pilots excited about aviation.  The brainchild of EAA flight director and former control line stunt national champion Sean Elliot, control line flying has been a staple at the Pioneer Airport during AirVenture since before KidVenture was part of the annual event.  Due to the extremely tight flight restrictions, control line is a natural way to show model aviation without interfering with crowds or full scale operations.   For example, this year’s  control line circles bordered full scale runways used by helicopters and the Goodyear blimp; the rotor downwash making some challenging turbulence for students.  While wet, soggy weather hampered early attendance, the 52 volunteers from all parts of the country persevered and ultimately conducted 1389 instruction flights for children from 45 states and 14 foreign countries.  On Saturday alone, 309 flights were flown on only 2 circles in a 6-hour period. Flight instruction runs constantly from 9am-3:30pm with the exception for 2 short air shows featuring pulse jets, autogiros, control line combat aircraft and precision aerobatic displays.
Special thanks go out to Washington state's Doug and Geri  MacArthur, this year’s EAA Control Line Chairmen, for making everything run smoothly. Thanks also to the entire Olson family (Howard, Co-Chairman Melissa, Erik, Kelsey and Sonja) for on-the-site support for everything from model flying to setting up the volunteer camping area in Camp Schoeller.  Former World Champion Remi Berringer, his father Gilbert (former French Champion) and mother Veronique traveled from France again to join in the activities and to fly in the demonstrations .  Rockford's Arthur Johnson kept all the airplanes flying and running well throughout the week thanks to his master mechanic and repairing skills.  We also can’t forget the St. Louis volunteers who developed a successful new airplane design – named the Tuff-Baby – for use at KidVenture and  Sig Manufacturing's Bob Nelson for the many years of support including fuel, delta darts kits and supplies.   Interested in helping out next year?  Please contact Doug and Geri at kvcontrolline@yahoo.com
