I'll be building a free flight Albatross DVa for the Flying Aces Club Nats this summer.
But your 'back in the day' description of the show, and reasons for going, are spot on. I'm too old and too far away to go any more, it was a day trip when I lived in the Boston area. Having lunch across the street and meeting up with old friends and visiting with the personalities of the modeling world was as much a draw for me as seeing the manufacturers. I contacted Walter Musciano and met up with him there one year. I'm still using stuff I got at the swap shop. The scale models were spectacular. And those were the days when, one by one, all the big guns of the manufacturering world began dropping out. First Sig, then Lanier, Jack Stafford, Davis Diesel etc. Despite that, there was still an excitement about going.
BUT, who's to say the quad guys aren't going to the show to share the same experiences. Maybe it's just me, but I can't begrudge these folks because they're interested in something other than what I like to do. I see the 'modelers' at the hobby shop as enthused and knowledgable about the ARF 'kits' as we all were about the Sterling, Top Flight, Sig C/L kits. It's a change in 'modeling' that isn't going away.
The real change is that Bob Hunt won't go anymore!!?? One of the highlights for me was always meeting up and chatting with Bob about C/L stuff at the AMA booth. At least we can still do that on this forum!
