Hi All,
I have been looking at a Sterling Super Swoop kit that has been in my basement forever. It's the old style green box kit, but I ain't no collector.
How would it work out as a sport plane? Maybe a single wheel under the engine ala the Flite Streak? Would probably use PolySpan for covering. I have an old VooDoo that hasn't been flown in a few centuries that would take a rebuild to get back in the air.
Have a retimed OS 25FP that isn't as "hot" as stock, but goes real well. (no OS 25LAs around here.......)
Any ideas? (got a Johnson Combat Special, too! )

I had an OS .35 Max III in mine. With a 9-7 Tornado and Missle Mist, open venturi and cc pressure, it was a haulin' a$$ airplane. Highly recommended! I got a NIB Max III last summer, so I need to build one. The cc pressure didn't work worth a darn on some engines, including the Max III and my favorite ST .35C's. Need baby pacifiers! Anybody know where to get some that are fuel tank useful?
I think last time I checked Bare's site, I found the Super Swoop plans. Previously, he only had the Average Swoop plans. The SS was a big airplane, but it was still very fast. Don't be skeered to let it rip! #^
I don't think the typical old combat model flies slow worth beans, but to be fair, the LO's would need to be moved forward. With the light weight, big lines, it would still sucketh. At least with the .25, you could use .012" lines. A stock .40FP would be my choice. Get the adrenalin pumpin'. ~> Steve

I just might stick the Johnson CS in it! Boy, I don't know if I can get as many "fast flights" in during a session anymore. ;D

From all the interest in this topic and the Demon thread going too, we GOTTA form a vintage combat society, assuming one doesn't already exist. There seem to be a lot of us who still have the Johnsons and STs and Vecos from the 60's in the back of the engine drawer. In my case it's the ST35 Combat Special I got when I was 13 and powered a fleet of VooDoos and the like in West Coast combat. Still got it! Barry Baxter does indeed have plans for both the original Swoop and the Sterling Super Swoop that came out around 1962, a little larger than the original. The drawback is that the wood in the Sterling kit probably weighs 48oz or so. I say put the Johnson on it and let it rip! Get a Flite Streak for fast stunt (and yes, I know they were flown in combat, which is what I did with mine around 1965).

A year and a half or so back, Curt Nixon (deals PAMPA Products) and I formed an informal Combat group. It "does" have some retrictions, though.......
It's the BOBFG Combat Assoc. (Big Old Bald Fat Guys!!!!!)

Hey, I resemble that remark! Hmmm...age 59, mostly bald, weigh a bit more than when last seen in the combat circle in 1966...how are my membership credentials shaping up? Add that I am no more mature now than then, and that I sniffed a lot of dope and glue fumes over the last 50 years, heck I should be a charter member! But remember, by these standards our fellow Alameda/Oakland flyer Phil Granderson is also a candidate...which means the rest of us don't have a chance!

My ST 35 C plain bearings always ran great on case pressure.The G21 35 seemed to do better on pacifiers.

I don't know, Steve, I ain't weighed 215 since I graduated from HS. But I was a sprinter then! **) **)
(I gotta drop a lot of weight, I'm in a 58 coat but 44 pants.... ;D )
On the "hair" part, that is negotiable.
Would have to get the "OK" from Capt. Curt. ;D
