"Skyray my way" finished photos
« on: December 14, 2006, 09:16:00 PM »
I finally finished the Skyray...

This one started out as a stock Sig Skyray kit. I re-did the wing with all new, re-spaced, balsa ribs, all of them now being full ribs, and no half ribs. I designed and constructed built up wingtips, and added some tapered, fixed flaps and covered with Polyspan. The overall wingspan is now 47" with 500 square inches of wing area including the tips. I just stayed with fixed flaps to keep the model simple, but I did install an adjustable leadout guide from Brodak and an outboard trim tab. I also designed an all new stab and elevator, with much more area than stock. The stab/elevator assembly is mounted in the stock location, however, with the added fixed flaps to the wing I effectively end up with a shorter moment than the standard Skyray.
On the fuse, I added a strip of triangle stock along the top and bottom, primarily to give a taller profile outline, and it will help stiffen the fuselage too. I also made new plywood doublers and added a tripler. The aluminum gear is Sig Fazer and the wheels are Kavan, available through Sig Mfg. Power is a stock O.S..35 with a venturi from Jim Lee and a muffler from an O.S..25 LA-S.
The paint scheme is just a fictitious 60's era Navy scheme that I sketched out. The Navy lettering and the "Stars and Bars" are from Sig, and then I had all the other graphics custom made for me by my friend Robb at Blown Concepts in Plymouth, MN.
I'll most likely be waiting for spring before the initial flights.

Hope you like it! ;D

That shop is disgustingly well organized. **) Still a nice looking plane though.

I agree about the neatness of the shop! With it that clean, the wife can easily see that you don't really need to buy anything new!  :X

Also agree that the Skyray looks good! Nice job.

That is the best looking Skyray I have ever seen.  If I counted right I have at least 5 of them in the dungeoun.  Now that neat looking shop makes it hard to hide things.  I got stuff I can't even find.  Later, DOC Holliday

Why wait til spring?  I was out today flying the Shameless and my Skyray.  Temps in upper 60's and a few wind gusts.  DOC Holliday
