Title: "Legacy"
Post by: Terry Bolin on February 28, 2007, 09:29:26 AM
Hi guys, We met Allan Brickhaus this last weekend. Great guy, I learned a lot just visiting with him at breakfast. I was on the fence about two kits recently so meeting Allan and him having the Legacy kit with him closed the deal. I bought one of his kits while in St. Louis flying. My question is: Who has had one of these and what engine did you use?  any info on changes?
Thanks, Terry Bolin

I have seen a couple of these fly and they are very good design. They can be powered by several engins with good sucess. Supre Tigre 60 or 56 or 51, Merco 61,Magnam 53, Moki 51 or even a K&B 61, 56 saito, 50or 62 Saito, for strokes or any of the piped motors that are available. I have a friend that had a out of the box Supre Tigre 60 in his.It flew good. Leo

Yep!  Leo nailed it!

Even a PA or Ro Jett 51, 61, 65, 75, 76, etc., on muffler is a nice choice.

A guy around here used an OS40VF with pipe. It was about 60 ounces and flew very well. Nice design.

Brian did very well with his, powered by an PA 51 on a pipe....and unfortunate gobbling of a leadout after a breakage caused it to meet it's demise. A shame

Hi, I'm in process of building the Brodak version of the Legacy right now. Is this roughly the same as the one you got directly from Allen?

I was planning on using my old standby engine at least to begin with as I'm pretty new to this still and don't want to have to learn engine setup lessons all over again. It's a TowerHobbies .46 - It's a heavy engine but it seems to have all kinds of power. After seeing every one else's recommendations of 50-60 size engines I may have to rethink this.

Any more pictures or advice anyone has would be great.

AFAIK, Brodak's is the only kit out there.

John Lowry has a short kit.

I believe this"partial kit", is for the shrunken down Legacy 40.

John,

That was a great plane, but you were mean to it. Maybe you should ship it to me. I'd be nicer to it.

Correct John.  Lowry has partial kits of the "Legacy 40".  BTW the Legacy 40 is a very good flyer!

For the record, in search of his Profile Stuka kit, I found out what John Lowry means by "Short Kit". He replied that all the wood was there, but no hardware. He also mentioned that he had huge piles of 4 to 6 lb balsa to make kits from!

Crist says the Legacy 40 is a good flier, by all reports the big Legacy is also. And while it isn't laser cut (yet), it's a bargain, especially if you shop around a bit at the Stunthanger sponsors. The wide wing mounted LG is a great way to get super takeoffs and landings, if your field is compatible.  H^^ Steve

I have two of these kits to build. I was planning to use my OS 46VF and pipe, but I didn't see it mentioned here and it seems like such a heavy motor compared to a PA 51/61. Any thoughts on this combo? Is it enough power?

Attempt to keep the Legacy under 60 ounces for the Brodak kit version which is around 690 square inches.  The Legacy 40 short kit is a model of around 575 square inches and should weigh around 45 ounces or less.

Hi Clint,

As long as there is nothing *wrong*  with your OS 46VF, it should be more than enough for the Legacy !  I have seen the Legacy fly well with the 40VF/pipe.

That was just a stress test for the well inguneered  %^@ structure. It survives to this day with a few repairs. You'd like it I think, I might be persuaded to let you fly it at the regionals... VD~
