I had three of them at one time.  The bypass calls it a 36X Combat Special, and there were two variations, with and without a center exhaust post.  It was the second Fox Schneurle engine (the big 40 was the first), and came between the last of the BB 36Xes and the Mark III Combat Special.  It had problems with breaking shafts, same as the first of the Mark IIIs did, but with a venturi restrictor in place for Slow Combat, it worked fine (slower rpms that way).

  That one was affectionately known as The Baldy, circa 1975. You are correct the plug is centered and slanted toward the exhaust side.
