I have not seen any place where to purchase the handle for a 4" plastic line reel. You know the hollow plastic "axle" we hold onto while winding up our lines. Does anyone have a source to buy just these from?
-
no clue where to buy them... maybe buy a hardwood dowel from home depot as a replacement?
-
Have you tried Brodak?

My mother gave me this one when I was really small. LL~
Seriously, the only place I have seen them is at junk and estate sales. I had two that disappeared at contests last year.
If you find a source, I want three!

It appears Brodak's includes it with their 5" plastic reel and a clip for $16.99. I have MANY 4" plastic reels, thus me asking for a source of the axles/handles only. Brodak's doesn't list it separate.

Thanks Ty....BUT....

I had several, but I long since threw them away or lost them. I never use them, I could never figure out how to use them. I just use my fingers as the axle and the handle, with other fingers to apply the tension/anti-backlash force.

Lucky You !!! lol

Well I quit using the plastic handle that came with the reels years ago. Made a winding handle to roll up the lines on the reel. But lately even though they are bigger I have been converting to kite reels. D>K

That looks like a piece of PVC pipe to me...not trying to be a smartie.

A piece of 1/2" conduit or water pipe and put a cap on it keeps the reel from falling off.

I'm with Doc on this, I moved to Kite Reels a few years ago.
They are perfect for the job.

Which kite reel? Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CJTDRS1/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4?pd_rd_i=B07CJTDRS1&pd_rd_w=nLxcl&pf_rd_p=45a72588-80f7-4414-9851-786f6c16d42b&pd_rd_wg=bQMrB&pf_rd_r=VK6WXZ3BF8FHJ4KVVZ34&pd_rd_r=45596173-2cab-4163-8284-44d601265989&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFHRVpKQVI4TFYzVk8mZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAxMzY1NDExOE1DR1k4NzhNM1A1JmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA3MzY5MjcyR1NNNUhZSUNRQVZZJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1 (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CJTDRS1/ref=sspa_dk_detail_4?pd_rd_i=B07CJTDRS1&pd_rd_w=nLxcl&pf_rd_p=45a72588-80f7-4414-9851-786f6c16d42b&pd_rd_wg=bQMrB&pf_rd_r=VK6WXZ3BF8FHJ4KVVZ34&pd_rd_r=45596173-2cab-4163-8284-44d601265989&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFHRVpKQVI4TFYzVk8mZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAxMzY1NDExOE1DR1k4NzhNM1A1JmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA3MzY5MjcyR1NNNUhZSUNRQVZZJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfZGV0YWlsJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ&th=1)

Yes, That's the sort of thing.
I added an anchor point for attaching the lines before winding and also had to break the plastic insert in the line guide to allow the connectors to pass through.
But they work well and are a decent diameter. A simple elastic band keeps the lines under a bit of tension once on the reel.

I have converted most of my lines reels to converted kite line winders. They have the handle built in also have a nice big diameter. Or I use the trusty reel crank by Tom's Building service. Stunt Hangar stocks them.

For what it's worth there is a long thread on modifying kite reels for our use.

PS eBay has em for about $5.

They may be different, BUT...
Without one of the blue handles to measure, I found the older yellow handles to measure this way:
Outer "cheek" diameter = ~5"; estimated inner diameter ~ 4"; width between faces ~1".
"Tube" diameter: VERY close to 0.875" (7/8.")
IF you can find PVC tube 7/8" OD, it should fit.
The "tube" on the yellow pieces had a slit about 3/8" deep, and a slight raised ring at their ends. This allowed the tube to be definitely 'stopped' from pulling through the reel, but capable of removal when the slit was squeezed firmly.
A cotter pin through one end should limit the tube from pulling through, and the hand's grip on the other face should keep things happy.
You're welcome: \LOU

I bought one of the cranks for for the small reels some years ago and made another one to fit the bigger blue reels. Made the mistake of painting the dowel on the small one and then the wood must have swollen because it got stuck like it was glued in with CYA after it had been left on the reel during several years of inactivity. It finally loosened up and I sanded off all the paint. No further problems

Dan Rutherford made me a nice crank. It’s in a pawnshop somewhere in Dallas.

IF I'm ever in Dallas, I'll have something to do!

I made up a crank about like the one Elwyn mentioned. (Didn't paint it and Arizona is so dry that wood shrinks, not swells..)
Handy, but often forgotten when reeling-in. Still have it in the bottom of my field box, somewhere...
