Which Cobra???

The Cobra has been one of my favorite models for a long time.  After looking at the pix on the Cobra Repair thread many times I have finally decided to build one.

Which is the best version??  Is bigger always better? (I think I would like the larger version, 55" span, I think.)

Ther is only one Steve Wooley Cobra. Others are called Cobra, but are based on the original and are in fact larger. The Cobra 7, Cobra 9,. etc. A few are from Europe.  Hard not to build one. Just a beautiful example of form and function becoming poetry in flight.  Personally, I'd stick with the Steve Wooley version.  If using plans other than those done in CAD by Pat Johnston, be sure to add the tip plate. Pat did the CAD work for the Umland kit and this item had to be added, as it is not on the published plans and it is crucial to building the I beam wing. H^^

Thanks, Ty.  I am pretty sure Steve built more than one, but I don't know of any other versions that are *THE* Cobra. ;D

Tip plates, accurately drawn, are without a doubt a KEY element in building an I-Beamer.

  This is a personal opinion, I base it on my own dealings with Pat Johnston.


  If the plans for the "COBRA" have been done by Pat, they are the best. I have dealt with Pat for a while now, he is doing two more plans for me now. I would highly recommend anything he does.  Just my nickles worth.

Hi Jim,

That's the one to build.  And Steve used a Fox 35. (on 20%-25% Nitro! LOL!!)

In april 1990 Flying models, there is another Cobra done by Mike Ditrich without the turtle deck that is just beautiful. Span 56", 639 sq.", 48 oz. with a Super Tigre 46. To bad it is not classic legal.

There is a copy of the origional plans for sale on the bay. Seller is skystone. I have bought plans from ham and had no problems.

 Nope he used a Fox .29 w/ 2 extra head gaskets, with 25% nitro, says so right in the article.

I was just going on what Billy told me that Steve used in the Cobra since he was pretty tight with Steve.  I just believe him.  Steve was also known to use an OS Max NVA which restricted the throat even more. H^^

There was a LOT going on back then as you well know! **)

Those *10-6* props weren't always, and Billy (among others) loved to *tip the jug*! ;D

I too buy some plans from  Skystone on ebay, but his plan does NOT have the tip plate. Try the ones from Pat Johnston, as it does. It was CAD drawn from the same magazine plans as those on ebay, but with the important tip plate.  H^^ Same ones in the kit.

Ty:  I met Skystone(alias Jim Johnson) at VSC a couple of years ago.  Very nice gentleman.  I imagine if you pointed out the error to him it would be corrected.  I have not seen the plan, but, have several plans I have gotten from him.  He is now in the Tuscon area.  Have fun,  DOC Holliday
