"Blackhead" McCoy?

A friend gave me this McCoy .19. All I remember are the old Red Head McCoys, I just don't recall a McCoy with this case, and a black head.

On the test stand it seemed to run fine; I'll clean it up and will put it in an old Ringmaster to judge it's performance capabilities. If it's a good choice, I may enter Clint's Stunt 25 with it.

Any ideas/opinions?

Hi Brian,

That is the "Last McCoy".  The Series 21 that Testors made.  Very heavy but longer lasting than the Red Heads due to the Dykes ring.  A touch smoother running than a Red Head with same timing, etc..

I used to have a series 21 .40 in a magician in the mid-seventies. It was a great engine with a great 4-2-4 until one of the control lines broke coming out of a wingover....over pavement.
That was the sad ending of my mccoy!

Yep, and they come in several sizes... I have a .35 in the slobmaster that is a rocket!

Brian, I'm glad you're looking to enter the Stunt 25 event. But I think you might put yourself at a disadvantage by using that old McCoy. It's very heavy for a .19 an only makes about 1/2 the power of FP or LA 25. But if it seems to be working good for you, go for it. Since the rules say you have to use the stock muffler (and as far as I know there is no stock muffler for it) we'll have to figure out what would be a legal silencer. It's doable.

...Series 21.  Too ugly to bolt onto any airplane I'd  ever fly.  Even if it was very tail heavy.  Butt-ugly and as worthless as a second mother-in-law.

Oops; I forgot about the muffler rule. It's not setup for a muffler, so I was planning on straping on a tongue muffler. I'll ask around the club and see if someone has an LA 25 they can part with. I'll put the .19 on the Ringmaster anyway, just to see.

Don't fret over the apparent lack of compression. The ring expands and seals when it runs. This is the second complaint next to the overblown weight myth. I have several .35's and think they're a good vintage engine.

Wow! I am glad we don't have a muffler rule at the fields that I fly at. If they did I would not be able to fly most of my planes. Fox 59's, and Anderson Spitfires don't do well with mufflers. And to think, we use to fly these at the school yards. That was back when we still had freedom, and all the neighbors wanted to see us fly. Guess thats why I like them so much.

The two best things about the Series 21 McCoy engines is that they have a ring, and they are timed the same as the Red Heads.  If yu can use the extra weight on a tail heavy plane, they are a good vintage engine.  The best thing is to take the piston and ring and drop it into a Lightning Bolt RH case.  Just make sure the cylinder jug in the RH has "fences" in the ports for the ring.  They are direct fits for the .29-40. (not the .19, though)

Full disclosure, I've never run the Testor McCoy .19 so this might not be worth much.  Nonetheless...

In 1974 I qualified for the finals at the Nats (finished, IIRC, 15th...this was prior to the top five flyoff finals) flying a jet styled modified Nobler called the Moby Dick (for very good reasons, it weighted 64 oz) and the powerplant was a Testor McCoy .40.  Never had any concern about power even with the heavy weight.  I believe I still have that engine (and maybe one other) in my cabinet.

Hi Brian

Those were really strong 19s, I had many of them, however they did shoot broken cranks out of the front at an alarming rate.
So I would suggest that you don't run them hard.
I used one on a Shark 15 that was a great combo...untill...
