Here is a solution hat really works. Ginny nd I have not had that problem for the past 10 years. We cancelled our subscription to cable TV, and the world  has been a happier place for the two of us. No TV at all! What a JOY!

Double edged sword IMO

I am retired and tend to watch too much TV so hate the ads

BUT I am very rural and traveling to BUY is a pain..crowds, parking, not really wanting to fuss with holiday shopping and USUALLY have a higher desire than the loss leader super discounted item any way

EX: I want a new Large TV but not willing to get sucked into a OFF Brand 55"~70"  720DPI 60Mhz for $199

OTOH....with early research...price vs features....against a list of desirable purchases.... an specs I must have...I have been real successful on maximizing my fix income $$$ this time of year

You need to feel it from Canada’s side. It’s not even our holiday and the adds are nonstop.

We spent Canada's Thanksgiving in Victoria, BC for our anniversary (which also coincides with Minneapolis' Indigenous People's Day) then had a 2nd Thanksgiving back here many years back.  I simply can't fathom anyone buying me a luxury car for a gift.  I'm happy to get a new pair of bluejeans.  Never received any hobby items for a gift.

Pity the Japanese.  They're not even Christians but it's still a big shopping season for them.  I dislike malls.  Don't like crowds.

Best Christmas we ever had my mother-in-law bought us all a sleigh ride through the northwoods of Wisconsin years ago.  Now it's 50/50 we even see snow by Christmas.

Sick to death of it already myself. At least they haven't started nonstop Christmas music yet. Used to be they would start this at noon on thanksgiving day, which was a perfect transition.  Once a few years ago they started full time Christmas music on Nov 1. I literally went to the station, asked for the program manager, and complained directly in person. Both about the excessive duration and some of what have become, for reasons I cannot fathom, Christmas songs.  Like the one that goes "last Christmas I gave you my heart, the very next day you gave it away....".  The ONLY reason this could be contrived to be a Christmas song is that the moron got dumped at Christmas time!
Then there is my constant irritation with "happy holidays " and people talking about what they are doing for the "holidays " post thanksgiving. Excuse me, just what "holidays" are you celebrating?  In this culture 98% of the people only celebrate Christmas in this time, and New Years I guess. It's Christmas, not some generic "holidays ".

My wife Kaye and I have been discussing doing exactly what Joe Just said He has done.
We pay over $175.00 a month for crappy programming and COMMERCIALS!  Not to the mention the constant barrage of really depressing NEWS and FAKE NEWS!

We have just about decided to do away with it and just watch an occasional movie instead!

I've decided I'm just too old to tolerate all the CRAP!

Fred, move back to Oakland and all your problems will be solved! Plus can fly with World and National champs every weekend!

As for our American Christmas I would be happy to ditch the Viking Woden's Mid-Winter Festival and go to something more, you know, aligned with Christmas. And as for movies, there is always Miracle on 34th Street and It's a Wonderful Life, for uplifting and family oriented messaging.

'Twas the night before Black Friday,
Most just called it Thursday
Greedy people went shopping
With credit they'd pay.

Armed with their lists
And prepared to do battle.
They charged through the doors
Knowing just where to scramble.

With no shopping carts
Or room in the aisle.
They shoved and they pushed
Some just crawled on the tile.

They took what they wanted
From adults, girls and boys.
Their lives would be empty
Without half priced toys.

It seems quiet apparent
These folks have no friends.
And this is just Thursday
Tomorrow it begins.

I work in retail and the whole hype surrounding "Black Friday" (and now Thanksgiving day) has been perpetuated and used by retailers to get people to shop on one day (or one weekend) for supposed "bargains".  In fact, only a few items are truly bargains.  Those are usually called "doorbusters" and are very limited in quantity.  Also even if the brand is one of quality, the doorbuster is at the low end of the line.  Nowadays most if not all retailers have encouraged holiday creep by starting supposed Black Friday prices as early as the day after Halloween.

If you truly want to end this madness, DON'T SHOP on Thanksgiving day or on "Black Friday".  The retailers do not want to pay their employees to just stand around if no one comes to the store.
Thanks,

Yea. it is sickening.

When I was playing piano regularly in jazz clubs. piano bars, hotels, etc, I used to play a Christmas song in July. Now the stores are ready for Christmas in July.

The song I hate the most is the one by John Lennon. He wrote some great music, but that one just irritates me.

No one will ever top Irving Berlin's White Christmas, and Mel Torme's Christmas song.

But, "Silent Night is forever the most meaningful.

So true about 'Silent Night' as it invokes a lot of memories.     The wife didn't do black Friday like in the past when her Mother was still alive and I still miss her even though she was a Mother-in-law.

Guys:

Just keep reminding yourselves: nobody (at least no sane body) on their deathbed ever said: "Gee, I wish I would have spent more time watching TV"

If you really have to watch (because you're tired and want to relax a bit) take a book with you and read that while the TV provides "white noise".  After a while you can pretty much concentrate on the book and treat most TV viewing as it actually is: white noise.  Remember that part of the reason you don't like TV is that it is pitched at the lowest 2% of intelligence, so you can probably catch all you need to follow the plot with about 20 or so neurons while the rest do something useful...

So, check this report out:

https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/888553?src=wnl_edit_tpal&uac=269058HY

It basically says that TV viewing increases incidence of cancer and other diseases that you definitely don't want.

Our local Portland Wednesday newspaper was stuffed with so many advertisements, that I thought it was a bonus Sunday edition! On top of that, they printed a special edition Thursday (we don't get a Thursday paper) that was also bloated with ads.

Fortunately, a neighbor's son is soon moving out of state, and they asked me to please save my papers for packing material.  ;D

OH Yeah!  Guess I forgot that one.  By golly batteries do have a usage for models airplanes after all.
Fortunately you don't have to carry that one around like a useless passenger once it's done it work!  Or you could simple use a Diesel Engine and forget about the dammed Stupid electron all together.  Hmmmm do they have electric diesels?  They do have Diesel Electrics but of course the real motive force there is still LIQUID fuel.  Hmmm, just like my engines!

Actually most of those funny electric things some of you guys call Motors get their power from batteries that are usually charged (fueled) by some kind of LIQUID fueled device called an ENGINE,  Unless of course you live close to a Dammed DAM then it's powered by a liquid powered turbine!

Of Course there's Solar Power...What a joke that is!  If you covered the earth with windmills and Solar cells you might actually get about as much power as can be provided by a dozen or so Oil wells!

Batteries are just very inefficient storage devices that have very limited usage!

OK  BLACK Friday and CYBER MONDAY are past...

I admit I added a LOT to the 4 BILLION + of internet sales

Fortunately, for me, over the years I have been fairly adept at researching a product...reading the RELEVANT reviews...and deciding to buy or NOT buy

Wife and I also are very good a budge stetting to live within fixed income means

There are, over the year----- a few "want to have items" I wait for these sales

And this year was time for further expansion into the 21st century with laptop, tv, cell phone, and router...

Next year are upgraded to 13 year old kitchen major appliances... I am hopeful

Good research, frugal shopping, coupons, sales etc...I spent a lot ----but got good value for my "sit on my ass in front a computer effort" and dollars spent..... Credit card with generous cash back and low interest is a plus.. and we always pay off before interest anyway

SO, like noted above.... this time of year is indeed a double edged sword.... way too commercial...a bit crass...  But while all the stupids rush to Target/Sears/Macy's/WalMart/Home depot/Lowe's  at midnight and risk being trampled, or parking lot theft ...I sit here blissfully exploiting my many premier / prime/ subscriptions and saving a great deal.

While ensuring our 401 with a 4th quarter exceeding 3% growth is assured.....is growing ahead of my spending... Thunk on that a bit

What I mean is.... all this spending is great for MY economy cuz I have a very complex and diverse portfolio of investments with a great firm that I trust
