"ARC" Sukhoi pics...(condensed)
« on: October 11, 2006, 10:57:53 AM »
Here is my Sukhoi that was completely designed and scratchbuilt around an ARF Nobler wing. This is the first full-fuse plane I ever built, finished in June 2005. The wing was obtained from a fellow club member who suffered the infamous clevis failure during a contest flight in Fargo, ND. The rest of the plane was destroyed, but the wing was virtually undamaged.
All moments are copied directly from the Nobler, but I increased the flap, stab and elevator area . Wingspan is 50".
Construction started by stripping the Monokote, knocking off the stock built-up wingtips and went from there, basically "winging it" and "eyeball engineering" all the way through. The canopy was sectioned from a Sig bubble canopy. The L/G was trimmed down from a Great Planes R/C piece. Power is a good 'ol K&B .40, and things settled in nicely with an 11X5 prop. The plane takes off, glides in and lands practically by itself if the pilot is smart enough to leave it alone. ;D The rest of the performance was deemed " I wish my models flew that well off the bench", by a fellow 500 plus point flier from our club after he flew it a few times.
This plane, if asked, will perform WELL beyond my own capabilities at this time, so I'm kind of just "saving it". y1

An amazing job of dressing up a Nobler.  I never would have guessed.  Was wondering which RC ARF kit it was.

It's a beauty. Like my wife always says, "your not actually going to take it out and fly it are you"?

Awesome plane Warbird!  Ive always liked the lines of the Shukoi.  I thinks its the round cowl.  I would very much like to find plans for a similar design.

Hi Wayne; I remember seeing this model at SIG. And the Hughes Racer you also posted, I've seen the neat Sterling Hellcat you did.
You should REALLY consider contacting Flying Models and Model Aviation for their guidlines on publishing plans and articles. The stuff you have been doing is what I think they are looking for, even if it is a kit bashed airplane. Jack Sheeks did several of these in addition to his "Beamer of the Month" articles he did over the years. You definately have the talent for building the models and you'll figure the rest of the other stuff out.
I would pop for a set of plans for the Sukhoi in a nano second!
  Good luck and have fun,

I remember the first time you posted pictures of the Sukhoi.  It has not lost it's impact on me!  Great job, and put some flights on that bad boy, you'll love it!  y1

You're right Bill, but my level of flying ability is not anywhere near worthy of flying this model much at this time. ;D Even at my level though, I can tell it's a REALLY good flying model. Thing is, it seems a waste of the airplane just flying it through loop after loop and just burning up fuel, especially when I could be banging up or crashing other perfectly good airplanes! f~

Wwwarbird,

Any idea of how much you added to the flaps and the tail?

We have a bit of a Sukhoi thing going in this part of the world, and I have a damaged Nobler wing looking for some TLC.

Cooool looking model.
