When will the first eligibility list be posted?
« on: July 13, 2009, 09:34:32 AM »
When will the first eligibility list be posted?

Will PAMPA release another book with eligble designs like they did for OT and Classic, or will Wilke release a CD similar to his OT and Classics disk?

If I was to do this, I would include a preview supplemetal edition, with designs that will become eligible within the next 5 years. That would allow me to contemplate, build, and prepare in advance.

What do you think?

Yes... John is very capable of the job. I would hate to think of how much time Tom Morris invested in the original Classic directory.

Does "Nostalgia 30" mean airplanes 30 years old? That would make 1980 the cut off for next year. (2010). And 1981 the following year, etc.

Hi Tom

Yes it means 30 years old or older

I'm not sure I'd be the best person to compile such a list.  Here's what we all can do though.

Let's put together a list right here.

I'll start.

I have access to Bob Barons 40 size HumBug. About 800 sq inches, powered with a McCoy .40, series 21. Plans say 1972.

Dennis, what's the date for your Orange Crate?

Also add Vic Macaluso's F-14, and his Crusader.  I'll have to check our archives of old stunt magazines to see what we've got.  Oh here's one, I think Andy Lee's Sunshine.

Okay, here we go. Today from Flying Models;Jan 1970 through Dec 1980. 1980 of course it's for next year, but taking the time to gather the plans, article, wood, do it to it, etc, it could be Jan 80. In time for King Orange if they do the Nostalgia 30 thing.  Ok; issue, designer or author, profile if so, SS =semi scale, eng listed, type wing if not C orD tube.  ALSO I DO KNOW SOME OF THE FIRST ONES LISTED ARE CLASSIC ELEGIBLE DUE TO DESIGN, BUILD, FLY DATES OTHER THAN THE ISSUE DATE. READ THIS SENTENCE AGAIN, AND AGAIN. Nuff said.  Also some of these have been kitted.
Flying Models only this listing.  Other mags later in the week. Only trouble is I keep finding articles I want to re-read. LL~

Jan 70; Kawasaki Hein (Tony);  Vince Micchia; profile; SS, .35

Apr 70; ME-109; Jack Sheeks; SS; .35

Mar 70; Ryan PT 20; Dr. Amilcare Di Mezza; SS; .35 Based on Ryan STA. USAAF trainer version.

May 70; Novi IV; C. David Gierke; .35

June 70;  F86D "Sabre Stunter";  Bob Lampione; SS; .35; trike gear.

Jul 70; The Stuka JU-87; Jack Sheeks; ST.40, I-beam

Aug 70; P51B Mustang; Joe Berry; SS; .35

Feb 71; The Old Glory; Jack Sheeks; .40; I-beam

Jun 71; Vulcan; Bob Lampione; .35; trike gear

Aug 71; Magister; Jack Sheeks; .35; Profile; vee tail; trike gear (C tube) need to say that on Jacks which tend to be I beamers more often than not.

Dec 71; Stunt Machine; Gene Schaffer; OS .35

Jun 72; P40; Bill Simons; OS .35; SS

Jul 72; Be-Witched; Jack Sheeks; .35; trike gear; twin boom; C-tube

Oct 72; Fly Baby; Jack Sheeks; McCoy .40; SS; I-beam

Aug 73; Hurricane; Jack Sheeks; SS; .35; C-tube

Oct 73; U-2; Joe Adamusko; SS; OS .35; 4 point gear like full size U2.

Dec 73; Miss Dora; Dennis Duvall

Feb 74; Genesis I; Bob Hunt;  foam wing; the style of this one set a new trend and many following CLPA models were clones of this one.

Mar 74; P26; Jack Sheeks; SS;

Apr 74; Talon; Dave Rees; SS; trike gear; foam

Jul 74; Sunshine; Andy Lee; foam wing

Grandpa designed a few planes during the 70s that now are Nostalgia 30 legal.  He designed an XP-40, Minnow (cheek cowls, nobler moments), and a couple others I can't quite remember.

In order for them to be "legal", we or rather the CDs need photos, dated proof, magazine articles, etc. Memories don't do the job.  Are the photos dated on the back. Many are if done at most photos developer shops. Any dated plans?  No matter what proof, is  required, that is why I am listing not only plans presented in the mags, but articles with photos.  Very many planes were modified or "kit bashed" kits and no plans were ever rendered.  Thus the YR and MO of the magazines are listed with the photos and the section those photos are in such as Round & Round in MAN, or Aerobatics in MA, Nats reports, etc.   H^^ D>K

he has the plans and they are dated.  he also has pictures of the planes from the 70s.  The XP-40 he designed in 1970 and the Minnow around 1972.

Edit: If I only knew how to scan pictures into the computer, I would post pics of those planes.

I believe almost all of these designs are Classic eligible as they were built and designed in 1969 and only because of publication dates came out in 1970.. the Joe Berry Mustang is particularly interesting as it describes "Bad weather in February" in the article and flying the first Sunday in March of 1970 most likely being built during the winter of 1969.. also there is a reference to the Sheeks Stuka from July FM 1970.. " I wanted to get even for the Stuka test flight episode.".. leading one to believe that this plane was also built in 1969.

So my question.. are classic legal designs going to be allowed, I know they fit the rule.. or do you believe that this event should use the cut off date and keep it exclusive to those designs that are 30 yrs old Now.. and keep floating the time line each year to include one more year of designs? Or maybe.. just a block of those designs that are now 30 yrs old and not keep adding new ones ? Seems that it should follow a cut off date instead of keep adding new planes until Walker's Bad News or Impact become eligible.. and then it won't matter.. it will just be another event where the "winning designs" get built and the less known are relegated to history.. I think the OT event has suffered some of this..

Jan 70; Kawasaki Hein (Tony);  Vince Micchia; profile; SS, .35

Apr 70; ME-109; Jack Sheeks; SS; .35

Mar 70; Ryan PT 20; Dr. Amilcare Di Mezza; SS; .35 Based on Ryan STA. USAAF trainer version.

May 70; Novi IV; C. David Gierke; .35

June 70;  F86D "Sabre Stunter";  Bob Lampione; SS; .35; trike gear.

Jul 70; The Stuka JU-87; Jack Sheeks; ST.40, I-beam

Aug 70; P561B Mustang; Joe Berry; SS; .35

Thanks Ty.. I saw this "new" column and didn't read the whole concept before I posted... still I find it very exciting.. planes that wouldn't get built and flown in PA are getting a second life.. at competition.. thanks for all the work and research you have done.

""You are to, as I understnd it so far, declare one or the other, but not both.""

Hi Ty

You are correct, if the contest is ran with both classes merged together. If they are ran in a separate circle by themselves you can fly both events

Randy
