MUSIC turns 30
« on: December 21, 2012, 02:30:41 PM »
Mostly as an FYI, I just cut ribs to build the 30th anniversary Music.  It was designed and flown in1983 and the third copy was entered at the 85' Nats in Chicopee.  I kitted the ship for a few years in the early 90s.  It usually had the ST .46 in the nose but some had an OS .46SF. The last I built and entered in Pasco had a pre-production prototype Willey .40 and pipe.  My new one is for Open class and will be take-apart and be powered with a special PA .51 T from Bill Werwages' personal stash. The only changes over the years was to double doublers at the fuselage leading edge  to stop fatigue cracking due to Music's hard corners and I added about 1/2" to the belly in piped versions to cover the pipe.  It should be accepted for N30 in 2013 and I could supply plans to those interested for $25 post paid.

Hi Denny! Thanks for the pix!  That's the only one I think exists of that particular airplane, the #3 Chicopee machine. I nearly forgot the paint job-may do that on the new one.  Don't remember that muffler.  Your Dad made most of the ones I used in those days.  Hope you will come 'play' with us Muncie this year!  Great to here from you.

Dave:
I would have sworn I had a couple more pix around here somewhere - will keep looking!  Always loved the "theme" of your paint schemes.  The white pnstripes on the tail were different than anyone else was doing...

EDIT:

Found this one - where does "Dues Paid" fit in the lineage?  Again love that paint scheme...

First time I ever saw this one. Its got that real Flushing Meadows 70's look to it. It's got New York style wing tips, forward canopy-the whole nine yards. Seems like this would be a very popular kit with todays motors-Evo 60 etc.

Denny that is #2 I think.  That was the original name.  Music came from joking with my flying partner at the time Jim Cochran.  Wish I remembered the joke!  I think it had a foam wing. If that's true then I flew this airplane at the Nats a year earlier-1984

The model is very nice, well, I'm suspect to say anything, I love the models from that time...
Anyway, what to say, happy birthday!!

Thank you all for the nice comments. The inspiration for the paint scheme actually came from the Winter Olympics-the USA team bobsled!  Milton the EVO would be a good choice here or the ST .51. Don't think LA .46-not enough musket balls here!  I'd bet the Discovery .54 or some Stalker would be good non-pipe alternatives here. The ST . 60 would shake the nose off. Back in the ice age Bob Hunt made me a lost foam wing jig for it.  He may still have the templates.

Hey, Dave, sitting here looking at Music plans.  Great looking ship!  Any idea after all these years where you got the airfoil from?   Fairly thick, looks like
it would do well with modern powerplants.  Really nice design...might have to put this one on the build list! Thanks...

Hi Bill.  I've been asked that before.  The concept of using the thick wing came from flying my buddy Jim's airplane at the time he called Foxfire.  He said then he sort of took it after RJ's Derringer.  I liked the thick wing a lot so I just went with the knowledge it was 2 3/8" at the root and set about my own airfoil planform which I still use today with tweaks.  My method for that may be the only secret I still keep!  Yes, I still believe the airplane is very current with modern engines.

Dave
Built a Music way back, from your kit supplied by Bri Stunt in Australia.
Sold on to a fellow modeller over ten years ago, now have it back after a chance
meeting at a comp this year. Powered by an St51, 58 oz's.
One question, in your instructions you say 64ft lines, are these end to end or from the handle to
 the centre of the model?
Cheers

Paul that is really sharp looking!  I'd have called those lines eyelet to eyelet but I'd now also say anything from there down to 61 ft would be fine judged mostly by the power you have. Mine were always on .018 due to engine size but by our new rules your could be on .015 and could handle more length. What I look for in order are 1. Get the engine running where it runs best (high on the power curve but with plenty of reserve for vertical maneuvers.  2. Size line length then to get the lap times I'm after (5.1-5.4) 3. Adjust tip weight now to match the lines I'm on.  If you proceed this way you'll be close.  Thanks for the photos!

Dave, I just want to say that your Music looks like a dandy little stunt ship. It seems to have all the elements for a great entry level competition ship.

If I may suggest, carbon fiber fuselage mounted gear with, wheelspants for guys who do the "back of the school yard" scene like we do here in Texas. That LG setup with your simple straitforward design, would appear to be a great little all around winner.

Milton thanks for your comments.  Anyone wishing to put on fuse gear sure could. I've always preferred the wide track wing gear and think it looks better.  The ship is competitive at any level depending on how you power it.  It was kept straightforward to keep weight down.   In those days it was a thick-winged 650 sq. with the ST .46, not a .60.  Most weighed 48 to 52 ounces.  Thx again.

Dave

(Which frustrates me-can't seem to build anything that light anymore)

John I hadn't looked here recently so didn't see the post.  First about Jim Cochran.  He is doing well but not flying.  His main interests now are grand kids and he plays in a jazz band.  I got him out once last year to watch me fly and gave him a new engine, fuel , lines , everything to get his several planes he still has going.  Nothing yet.  May try to drag him to Topeka this year for the contest.
John the OS is not near enough for the Music.  We used the Tigre .46 and it was just enough.  The ROJett .40 would be perfect on the pipe.  If you want to do that let me know.  I have pipe and will get you going with that fast.  Otherwise a Tigre .51 would be grand.  What else you got?  I'll look on my shelves.  I will put my PA .51 in the next one I build.  Think Tigre .46 +.  The OS shore ain't it.  I just occurred to me our esteemed club president is sitting on a half dozen  ST .46 and many parts.  We can shake him down.
