Title: Bill Suares's "F4J Phantom"
Post by: Dennis Toth on September 26, 2010, 12:30:49 PM
Guys,
Does anyone have a photo or plans for Bill Suares's "F4J Phantom" from around the 1971 era?

Best,                 DennisT

Dave Shirley Jr. made one a few years back. A search on this forum will get you the thread plus pics. Sorry, I don't know how to patch it in.  8)

Dennis,

Should have asked when I lived there.  I built one in 1976 and still have it, I think.

Attached are the photos and the plans page from the June 1971 AAM.

Hi Dennis,

Bill's F-4 is Classic legal! ;D  It was published in AAM side by side with Vic Macaluso's F-8 (both were Fox .35 powered! LOL!) in about 1971 (I have the issue, but not handy ;D ).  Bill's Phantom was designed/flown before 1970, Vic's Crusader was not.......  :'(

The F-4 is a very good flier, somewhat large for the Fox .35 (at least by today's standards).  I'd use an Aero Tiger .36, PA ultra light .40, Magnum .36 XL IIS, etc..  ;D

AMA has the plans available along with a few other vendors (Randy Smith, Tom Dixon, etc., ??).

Just had to say that Bill Suarez is a long time friend. He and Terri are wonder people.

I worked in engineering at McDonnell Aircraft (became McDonnell Douglas when I was there) on the F-4 and later the F-15 and DC-10. I can still remember part numbers and location of parts on the F-4. A font of useless info at this time.

So, the F-4 is close to me, and Bill's flew very well. I will also add that his P-38 Classic eligible airplane was also a very good stunter.

In more recent years Bill had a ST .60 airplane that was influenced by his F-4.

as Randy said the F4 is mine
the F8 is larry fernandez's and its a modern stunter, it just looks like vics and it dwarfs my F4 allthough they look the same size in the picture
and it appears to fly very well.

HI Dave,

Your F-4 is gorgeous!  I love the NAVY squadron scheme.  It is a wonderful break from the Blue Angles scheme (while pretty, also, is often overdone on Bill's plane).  When I was considering the F-4 as a project, I considered an Air Force camo scheme, but figured I would have too much trouble at the field seeing it in the trees! LL~ LL~ LL~

With Nostalgia 30 taking over everywhere around here, I can build Vic's .35 size F-8 and fly it in that class.  I think I really like the idea of Nostalgia 30, now. ;D

If it is Vic's last F8  it is a dressed up SV-11  which was a large plane Vic used a piped 40 in it

That F-4 is one of the coolest designs ever, so is the real thing. They each look like a killer even sitting still. Beautiful rendition too Dave. y1
