Matt these models are Big Jim's BJ's when wyndy returned to Nat's competition he built a Sweeper rather large model and Came in 21st place that year he was introduced to Big Jim and Jim gave him this design to use. Jim cut and sheeted the wing and tails Windy then made the top five 8 years in a row, the first five were with the BJ design and the following three with the PatternMaster. Windy being a great builder and designer of FLYING ART created his own look for these models.
The second plane in the photo is the LEGENDARY BJ 900  76"span(legendary to a group of us in the north east) Yes the model had 900 square inches of wing area. This model was used to beat the unbeatable Jimmy Cassale at several local contest.

Now whats behind the large flaps Big Jim's thinking was to use very large flaps with reduced movement to create a great amount of lift and reduce drag. Matt these models could turn like no other. The design series goes from a 35 to 60 size.

Matt now the bad side with props and motors available at the time in the wind they could wind up and get pretty fast and the wing would rock up and down not pitch just out board wing up and down into the wind and down wing. With today's motors pipes and carbon flat pitch i think they would be much better. Bob baron (LJ)and Windy(BJ) used these models for many top five finishes at the Nat's.(80's)
At one Nat's i believe in the south west we in new york were getting reports of Bob Barron dominating the Nat's first day Barron in first Second day same then came top five and the wind's came up  barons LJ with an FSR45 and monocote covered  built up surfaces began to flex and he came in third and i think windy fourth so those were the short Cummings of the high aspect planes at the time. To bad the pipe and carbon props were not around.

I like the picture of Windy with the hat. Sorta looks like Rocky.   ;D

I particularly liked the Relentless too. That was just cool looking.

Matt the El-Jay has 63" span and is a 40/46 ship 630"
The Bee-Jay 72" 750"span and is for the 60 Big Jim always said that the BJ was really a 51 size model as all the  ST60 had to be detuned. The photo of the plans I posted above are of the El-Jay 40/46
Matt some additional photos the SJ 35 model i also posted some photos of Bob Barons El-Jay's (as time goes Bye section)
Photo #1 Bob Baron's El-Jay FSR 45 Painted body Monokote wing and tail.
Photo #2 Bob Baron's LJ Windy BJ. This photo shows LJ and BJ
Photo #3 Hank Forbes SJ Max 35 (35 size model)
A short story Bob Baron put on one of the most spectacular flying display that i have ever seen. Bob was at flushing Meadows Park 1982/3 Hank Forbes was flying his SJ (not the one shown above)with max 35, Big Jim said to bob if you want to fly a good plane fly Hank's. The park that day was full but Baron took over the circle and proceeded to fly Six(6) back to back flights as hard as any i had seen with the hardest corners of anyone. and on the seventh flight he folded the model in mid air.(a little Devinne intervention)
NOTE this model was flown for a full season prior to Baron, but the strain that he put on that model  that day were tremendous.
After that day Bob started flying LJ's
At the 1984 worlds Bob's #1 model was the El-Jay but changed his mind and hi chose to fly the AVANTI  (high winds)he came in second.Big Jim never let him forget that choice as he thought if he staid with the El-Jay ho would win the World's
Photo #4 Bill Rich BJ ST60
Matt the only "J" series missing is the BJ900 it is shown in a photo above with Black Sunday. These models were designed in the late 1970's  I have Big Jim's second LJ 46 at home and have photo of the first one he called it Pattern master MK4

That Photo of Bill Rich is with an ST 60 powered LJ that he used in advanced.  As I recall, he snapped a line flying it in a contest at Johnsville, PA and Windy proceeded to lend him the Killer Bee for his second flight.  Without appearance points Bill won the contest and soon thereafter was flying expert.

I have video of Bob flying his, I believe 1996 winning orange Patternmaster at the 1997 Team Trials where, he place second Alternate-5th. You can see his ship oscillate going through the huge wake it creates.  I judged a guy at a couple of Socal contests, by the name of Steve Harris, who flew a blue LJ or BJ with a ST 60. Plane was good in the wind.

Big Jim told me that, Bob just called him up and asked for a set of plans. My guess was that, Bob was tired of experimenting, and just wanted to do some winning-which you will do with a Patternmaster!!

Jose, Andy Lee has a slide set of NY/NJ fliers from the 60's forward.  One of the shots is Big Jim with a yellow Patternmaster,
with a rounded turtle deck.  Dated around 1975 I think.  Do you have any idea where this one fits in the development cycle?
Thanks...

Bill Hummel. Big Jim built 4 pattern masters, the first one had a round top block with a forward canopy(jet style) painted red, white and blue 1971/2  all other pattern masters had the Stilleto Top
The first El Jay was called pattern Master Mk? That model had the rounded MOLDED BALSA OVER FOAM BUCK top block. That model was yellow red and I think blue.
I will post photos soon.

Big a Jim holding the first of the high aspect ratio models. They became known as the J series Sj,Lj,bj 900
Greg Gunder holding the Refinished BJ ST60
The next photo is of windy super light model 54 oz. ST60
the wing had the first geo wing rib pattern.
The Nat’s were to be held in Reno Nevada. The high altitude became a concern. Most top guns built super light models
Most light models dint  compete as the normal weight models were adequate

Re: Looking for Strega kit improvements...

Randy. Milton and I became friends with Big Jim in 1972. Milton was present wen the first and second Pattern Masters were built and flown. His knowledge base is a result of direct contact with Big Jim. First PM weight 65 oz the second PM was smaller and it weight was 55oz the third PM was even smaller and came in at 53oz I got to own that model.
I was present for all four pattern Master.
The PM that most are familiar with weight 68 oz with a merco 60 with two plugs. 750+ square inches that is light.
Windys model were always to light according to Big Jim.
Randy there are others with direct knowledge of the PM
You also mentioned that straga  was a high aspect ratio. first what is a high aspect ratio to you.
Windy competed with Big Jim high aspect ratio model they were called BJ (Big Jim) from 83 to 88 after 88 windy started to fly Pattern Masters. Windys 20 pointer was 63 oz which later became the green PM that came in second to Paul Walker in 1992. That model weigh was 71oz with a pipe and wrap around header on a tiger 60.
I will post some photos.
Bob Baron won the NATS with a PM

Hi Matt,
I note with great interest your Sweeper drawings. I've had the Sweeper in mind for some time and had started
a CAD drawing based on various pictures I'd found.

I'd be interested in completing a set of CAD plans with your input (assuming you'd want to do that.)

To date I've done CAD plans for  Igor Burger's Max Bee (available on PAMPA) and Brian Eather's Firecracker series (plans available from Brian).
Regards,
Kevin Wright

I noticed that in the AMA magazine on page 94 of the October 2020 issue, is a picture of a young man that did pretty well with a Patternmaster. Steven Daly, Senior C/L  Stunt National Champion. Great to see a young man bring back the Patternmaster to the winners circle again.....Gene

Gene,
That is my son Steven's plane. And it is based off a PM. If you read this thread, there were 4 PM's. Anyway, Steven's PM is based off the second one Big Jim built (Which is the B&W picture at the beginning of this thread). The cores for that plane were actually cut by Big Jim and they belonged to Hank Forbes, which then ended up with Jose Modesto, who in turn gave them to Steven. On the wings themselves was a note from Big Jim! Recently I have been trying to understand all of his designs and he had quite bit of them.
thanks
Joe
