Title: For the History Books: 1970's nats pictures
Post by: Shorts,David on January 11, 2019, 10:21:17 AM
Hi guys, I'm trying to get some help identifying "old" planes and people from 75 and 78 nats. I have some old WAM stuff I'll post later. I know Wynn Paul has collected thousands of items over the years, but if you have something of interest, maybe we should have a board for posting old pictures that aren't in Wynn's collection. These pictures are taken from 8mm film and I'll post the whole thing on youtube once I identify everyone possible.
There are many pictures that aren't here because Ted and Lanny Shorts identified them, but here are some more.

last group for help identifying. Thanks for any help. Keep an eye out for the videos too, they are a blast to watch, plus there are many more not pictured here, Wynn Paul, Fancher, Fitzgerald with his chipmunk, Whitely, Cassale, and more.

2nd set of pictures:

1st picture:  If this is 73 or 74, guy in helmet is probably me.  Was the ED for those two years, the first years of the PAMPA Nats.
6th picture:  Guy in the red had looks like Dave Hemstrought

3rd set of pictures:

2nd picture:  Bill Simons
last picture:  Wynn Paul

4th set of Pictures:

2nd picture:  Young person in red cap - Looks like David Fitzgerald,  person holding the plane is David's father - Bill Fitzgerald
The airplane is probably the Sig Mustang which David campaigned with at that time

4th picture:  Same as the fist picture in 2nd set of pictures.

Need help identifying these guys for the 78 nats video
Dave:  I cannot say for sure but that really looks like Lee Uberbacher in the first picture.  He was from Dallas and I flew with him regularly. I looked him up in Wynn Paul's book and he place 16th so he was there.  Unfortunately he is no longer with us to confirm.

Hi Ken, which first picture? I'd love to add his name to the description on the video. Thanks

Reply #3 1st picture.  Hard to say 100% since it had been a few years since I saw him and he had passed when I came back in around 2016/7.  Right size, Lee was big and always wore shorts and a baseball cap.  Really looks like him.   When I saw the pix my first reaction was "That's Lee!"

Ken

If the video shows what he was flying it would be a Talon.

First group, second picture: Youngster is Peter Bauer, man in sunglasses under umbrella is Charlie Bauer, his dad. From Chicago area. Peter is on current US CL Scale team.
Last group, third picture: Peter Bauer again, standing. White airplane is probably a pre-Top Flite Tutor, designed by older brother Mark Bauer.

Many years ago I sent a box of slides to Don Schultz, lots of slides.
Sadly he passed but somehow I think that box might still be with the family. That being said I have no idea how we could attempt to rescue those pictures.
They are mostly of the planes from the Nats between 1971 and 1976.

Second set of photos, looks like photos 2 and 3 are identical.  Hangar in the background, and two VW buses--one yellow and white, the other green and white.  Is the competitor Tom Dixon?

Bill is correct that it is me and Dad in the pictures.  The Tutor shown in the second picture is the one that was used for the box cover photo.  It flew great.
