Ron Burn Tribute
« on: July 18, 2024, 07:47:08 AM »
Hi All,

The Ron Burn tribute file could not be reduced to the 1MB file size limitation. So, if you would like to view or download the whole file, you can click one of the following two links:
1.   2.7 MB PDF version:   https://1drv.ms/b/s!AjhSNkN2lP_EhIog__miBIBTMPIL-g?e=ni5uNh
2. 27.3 MB Word version: https://1drv.ms/w/s!AjhSNkN2lP_EhIohiOQi-L2LuthmAg?e=bg7M3O

Below is a preview of some of the text from Ron's tribute file. The file includes 39 pages of pictures with some text headers & 6 pages for three of his Stunt News building articles.

Ron Burn (1934 – 2022)

17 July 2024
Ron Burn and his wife Janey lived and worked back east and retired in Los Osos, CA. There were not a lot of control line flyers on the Central Coast, but he did find a fellow stunt flyer and friend Bob Silva, who had retired and moved to the area from Southern California where Bob had flown at both the Sepulveda Basin and Whittier Narrows. Below are pictures of Ron’s youth mentorship, pictures of his shop and treasures it contained, some of his plans, remembrances of his F4F Wildcat, a new mentorship connection for Ron, and some of Ron’s Stunt News articles. Ron was a mentor to Chris Burkhardt and I here on the Central Coast. We are in our late 50s/early 60s and enjoying our reintroduction to control line building & flying. We always enjoyed Ron’s humor and appreciated his insightful input to our questions.

After Ron passed , Bob Silva, Chris, and Ron’s RC and builder friend from SLO Flyers, Bob van't Riet, and I offered Janey our services to help take care of Ron’s shop, which turned out to be a pretty big job. Bob van’t Riet worked with a local airport museum to donate some of Ron’s scale models for static display. Bob Silva and I took sellable kits and flyable free flight and RC models to Hobby Headquarters in Atascadero where we consigned them with proceeds going to Janey. Some of his free flight models are still hanging there. Chris sold engines on E-bay with proceeds also going to Janey. We all worked together to gather the hazardous waste and take it to proper disposal sites, and there was a lot! Janey said Chris and I could split the balsa for our future building endeavors. I bought a bunch of Ron’s tools many of which have already come in handy with my many repair projects 😉.

And then there were more and more rubber powered and other kits! I got an idea about them after watching a Bill Kuhl video about the Black Sheep Squadron Model Airplane Club in Southern California. In the early 2000s, I had the pleasure of helping with, and observing Ron’s wonderful youth mentorship that is covered in more details later in this tribute. I figured a donation of Ron’s kits to support the Black Sheep Squadron’s youth mentorship described in Bill’s video would be right in line with what Ron would have wanted. After connecting with club president Dave Gee, as fortune would have it, he and his wife were coming to the Central Coast. So, Bob vant 'Riet and I gathered the models and I met Dave at the Madonna Inn  for the hand off. Ron’s mentorship lives on and we think of him often! For those who knew Ron, please share your stories and pictures! ... Ron’s shop still has gobs of plans and magazines. Contact me if you have a good home for them and I will coordinate with Jayne.

Sincerely,
Andy Mutziger, AMA 1123392

I knew Ron when he lived here in Richmond, Virginia. Charlie Perkinson and I would sometimes go out and meet up with Ron and his flying buddy Jimmy Paul. Ron and Jimmy only flew stunt and Charlie and I flew mostly Combat. When Ted Fancher's articles came out in Model Aviation on his modified Twister I went out and bought a kit and began to modify it like Ted's articles. I had everything done with the fuselage and tail finished and the wing built ( with the landing gear mounted in the wing ) when I lost interest in it . That's when I sold it to Ron and he finished it. He said it was a great flying airplane!
I remember seeing him fly the Wildcat on a number of occasions and it always amazed me how well the airplane flew. Ron was a master craftsman and a pretty good stunt flier, too. He was always thinking "out of the box". He would come up with new ways of doing things in building his models.
He worked for Reynolds Aluminum here in Richmond that was about two miles from the house that I grew up in. In the late 1960's Reynolds and GM ( Chevrolet ) developed and made the first all aluminum big block Chevrolet 427 engine blocks ( here in Richmond ) for the Can-Am racing series. I believe Ron was involved with this program. Pretty important stuff in automotive history!
Not many people knew it but Ron was an actor in many productions in a number of dinner theaters in the Richmond area. I never went to see his shows but you could tell that he really enjoyed acting when you brought the subject up.
I didn't keep in touch with Ron when he moved out to California. Charlie kept up with Ron quite often and I would get what Ron was doing from Charlie.
I was sorry to hear of Ron's passing. I will always remember him with that big smile he seemed to always have when we talked. May he rest in peace.

Adding Ron Burn Plans to his Tribute
« Reply #3 on: February 16, 2025, 11:11:11 PM »
Hi All,
From readers of Ron's tribute, I've received requests to post the plans noted in the tribute. I spoke with his wife Janey and to the club, SLO Flyers, to verify they were OK with the plans being made public. Janey thought Ron would have appreciated that his designs would be available for others to enjoy building and flying. The SLO Flyers, appreciative of Ron's dedication to the SLO Flyers Young Aviators Academy Ron helped lead, were also pleased to approve the plans being posted. So, here are the two Academy plans Ron designed & drew plus a bonus Ron Burn designed & drawn plan set. For pictures of built up versions of these plans, please see the Ron Burn Tribute. Here's to Ron and all he did for our hobby!

PS: SLO Flyers also noted that two of Ron's models were donated by Janey and are on display at the Santa Maria Airport Museum of Flight (https://airmuseumguide.com/aviation-museums/usa/california/santa-maria-museum-of-flight/). His Zero is part of a Japanese aviation display. Next time I make it to Santa Maria, I'll take some pictures and add them to Ron's Tribute.

This plan set is 3MB, so its too big to post on Stunt Hangar. I've shared it to my OneDrive cloud for download, file name: HalfA-SpitfireByRonBurn20000615.pdf
The attached picture is a screenshot of what you will see when you click the link. Click the 3 ellipses and you will see the download option:

This plan set is the set Ron emailed me. It's a BMP file which is not a file format that can be uploaded to Stunt Hangar. So, I've shared the plans to my OneDrive cloud for download, file name: burned twister.bmp

The attached picture is a screenshot of what you will see when you click the link. In the upper left of the browser window that opens when you click the link, you should see a down arrow which you can click to download the file. Then navigate to where you downloaded it to open the file:
