Ron Burn and his wife Janey lived and worked back east and retired in Los Osos, CA. There were not a lot of control line flyers on the Central Coast, but he did find a fellow stunt flyer and friend Bob Silva, who had retired and moved to the area from Southern California where Bob had flown at both the Sepulveda Basin and Whittier Narrows. Below are pictures of Ron’s youth mentorship, pictures of his shop and treasures it contained, some of his plans, remembrances of his F4F Wildcat, a new mentorship connection for Ron, and some of Ron’s Stunt News articles. Ron was a mentor to Chris Burkhardt and I here on the Central Coast. We are in our late 50s/early 60s and enjoying our reintroduction to control line building & flying. We always enjoyed Ron’s humor and appreciated his insightful input to our questions.
After Ron passed , Bob Silva, Chris, and Ron’s RC and builder friend from SLO Flyers, Bob van't Riet, and I offered Janey our services to help take care of Ron’s shop, which turned out to be a pretty big job. Bob van’t Riet worked with a local airport museum to donate some of Ron’s scale models for static display. Bob Silva and I took sellable kits and flyable free flight and RC models to Hobby Headquarters in Atascadero where we consigned them with proceeds going to Janey. Some of his free flight models are still hanging there. Chris sold engines on E-bay with proceeds also going to Janey. We all worked together to gather the hazardous waste and take it to proper disposal sites, and there was a lot! Janey said Chris and I could split the balsa for our future building endeavors. I bought a bunch of Ron’s tools many of which have already come in handy with my many repair projects 😉.
And then there were more and more rubber powered and other kits! I got an idea about them after watching a Bill Kuhl video about the Black Sheep Squadron Model Airplane Club in Southern California. In the early 2000s, I had the pleasure of helping with, and observing Ron’s wonderful youth mentorship that is covered in more details later in this tribute. I figured a donation of Ron’s kits to support the Black Sheep Squadron’s youth mentorship described in Bill’s video would be right in line with what Ron would have wanted. After connecting with club president Dave Gee, as fortune would have it, he and his wife were coming to the Central Coast. So, Bob vant 'Riet and I gathered the models and I met Dave at the Madonna Inn for the hand off. Ron’s mentorship lives on and we think of him often!
For those who knew Ron, please share your stories and pictures! ... Ron’s shop still has gobs of plans and magazines. Contact me if you have a good home for them and I will coordinate with Jayne.Sincerely,
