Title: Norman Spear - USS Pueblo survivor and C/L flyer
Post by: Ara Dedekian on July 02, 2019, 11:45:12 AM

Norman Spear was among the crew of the USS Pueblo that was held captive, beaten and tortured for eleven months by the North Koreans during 1968. He was the last of the active flyers from Maine's heyday of C/L activity.

Norm went on to serve in Vietnam and worked for the city after retiring from the military. He was very quiet about his experiences; even the career Navy vets in my neighborhood knew nothing of Norm. He did talk about his captivity during our flying sessions. One story he told me was that the beatings weren't reserved for the US sailors. What he referred to as the 'kick sargent' inflicted the same beatings on his men occasionally if they didn't carry out his orders to his satisfaction.

Norm was a hard core C/L enthusiast and flew mostly sport and stunt.
