I am saddened to post that Doug Proffitt, age 72 passed away yesterday afternoon. He built his first control line plane at the age of 8, which he mowed yards to get the money to buy.
Doug served in the Army and was a retired Fort Pierce, FL police officer. He has a wife and daughter.
I met Doug in 1981 when I hired on at Fort Pierce Police Dept. We remained friends since that time, went to swap meets together and flew together when we could.
He had a 4 bypass about 3 years ago and was given 2 stents about a year ago.
Yesterday at 3:11pm he texted me about some ignition cut offs for his gas r/c plane. Later in the evening I texted back but did not get an answer. This morning his daughter called me and said his wife came home about 5pm and found him laying in the yard with a transmitter in his hand and a plane tied to a post.
He was breaking in a new engine he bought.
Doug will be missed.
Rest In Peace, Doug....
