Mike Tallman, longtime Wichita controlline modeler, passed away Saturday September 26, 2015 at the age of 70 after a couragious battle with cancer. Mike was a serious competitor and had been very active in C/L racing and combat up to the national level. His modeling interests were broad. He flew R/C, racing Q-500 and pylon, and more recently CD'd R/C slope racing contests. He flew indoor F/F as well. Along with Lew Woolard, he published his Spider slow combat design in Flying Models. In the 70s, Mike flew team stunt with Lew Woolard flying opposing WWI monoplane looking models (Two for the Show, MAN). Mike was a cornerstone of the Wichihawks controlline model airplane club. He was generous with his time and experience and will be sorely missed by the entire Wichita modeling community.
Mike is survived by his wife, Vernelle, a daughter, two grand-daughters, and other relatives.
A celebration of Mike's life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 2, at West Evangelical Free Church, 1161 N. Maize Rd., Wichita, KS. A reception will be held following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Union Rescue Mission or Heart Ministries/Victory Village Christian Academy, P.O. Box 2068, Hutchinson, KS, 67504-2068. Now that I'm over the shock as I really didn't know Mike was having problems. Can't remember how long I've known him. He was always a gentleman and helped my son and I get better at racing. Used to stay over night at his house in the early years. What else can I say other than he is missed already.

I flew both R/C and control line with Mike, and he was always a joy to be around. I will really miss him. He and his wife were two peas in a pod, and just the epitomy of what it means to be a modeler. Very sad news indeed.

Mike shared his wealth of knowledge with me, and anyone who needed it. I miss him already. He would know how to diagnose and resolve issues with flying, engines and airplanes, in an instant. I feel as though I am a better modeller because of the wisdom he provided. He was the glue and structure of the Wichihawks. Anyone who knew Mike, knows what a sad loss this is.

Just saw this.. So sorry - Mike was one of the really good guys in this sport.. Always fun to be around.. Knew him from the old days in combat plus he flew our Scat Cat 500 in quickie 500 for a long time. Got to talk to him often, even though it was on the phone, except at several Nats......Rest in peace my friend.

Mike was always a good friend and a solid Control Line supporter in my four years in Wichita.
It was good to have Mike as your pit man. He knew what needed to be done and how to get it done.
Among other things, he could change a HOT TeeDee .049 glow plug with his thumb and finger.
