Jim Phillips passed away on 1-29-15
« on: February 06, 2015, 10:53:49 AM »
I received an email From Mike Finnegan yesterday stating that Jim Phillips of Oklahoma City has passed on 1-29-15.
Jim was an old Combat/Rat Race/ Stunt flier who used to go to contests with John Ashford.  When I emailed him about John Ashford's death, he was unaware of it. Jim said that he had a bout with the flue last year, and ended up on an oxygen bottle full time. He told me that he couldn't fly, and the only time he went out was to occasionally go to the gun range and shoot with his son. Jim evidently had lung cancer.

Jim had a SIG Magnum that was finished in RED. It said "OU Sooners" on top, and "Texas Sucks" on the bottom of the wing. For some reason the airplane didn't score well in the Dallas contests! The airplane ended up in one of our Gluedobber contest raffles, and a Texan won it. It went back to Texas for a horrible fate, I'm sure!

Jim was a good guy, and I'm sad that he has passed.

Thanks for the news De.  Jim was a good guy, I remember the Magnum!  It is so sad to hear he is gone!  My thoughts and prayers for his family and close friends.  Man, are we loosing way too many now.  I hope the trend ends soon!

I'm saddened to hear of Jim's passing. Almost hate to turn on the computer any more for fear of hearing of another loss. He often had some interesting plane like the Tumblebug with its fake pipe or the Texas Sucks stunter poking fun at the OU-Texas football rivalry.

More sad news, but I guess that is expected at our ages.   Emmy and I went to I think was the last contest at the Oklahoma City flying field.  Someone had an album there showing a lot of history of that field.   Guess it is long gone now.

More sad news.

I liked Jim, he was a fine person. But I have to admit that I hated that airplane!

Jim was a good friend of mine.  We had many fun times at Topping Park here in OKC.  Jim was the backbone of our group of CL flyers.  He was always ready to welcome anyone who wanted to join us for flying control line and was willing to help anyone get in the air or improve their skills.  When I got back into control line, Jim took me from a raggedy Ringmaster to building and flying other planes.  He talked me into going to contests and was a delight to attend contests with.  Because of Jim I got bit by the Control Line Bug and plan on enjoying the sport for many years to come.
I will miss Jim
