Jerry Martin passed away this past Wednesday. He flew mostly Combat and Rat Race from the 1950s into the 1970s. Jerry was very much his own person and didn't yield to fads or trends. His ZOG combat wings, covered with paisley pattern silk scarves, were a fixture in the Midwest combat scene. Likewise, his LOG rats were as well. Professionally, he worked as an aeronautical engineer at Wright-Patterson AFB. I first met Jerry in 1960 just after he moved to Dayton from St. Louis and McDonnell-Douglas. He carted me around to all of the Ohio-Indiana-Kentucky-Michigan contests before I was able to drive myself. Jerry was also a mentor of sorts for my own engineering career. After winding down his modelling Jerry got into SCCA car racing and hang gliding but stayed involved with the Buzzards. Knowing Jerry was a very special privilege!
