Loss - John Sunderland passed- Designer of the Chevelle
« on: September 17, 2017, 07:57:05 PM »
I don't see anything here but we lost another one Thursday the 13th: John Sunderland left this life after a battle with liver cancer, way too soon, way too young.

Ah man, Randy, I HATE this!  John was one neat guy to hang out with.  I emailed him with my cell number and have had it on 24/7 every since in case he wanted a shoulder any time at all.  Guess I'll turn it off tonight as I wipe away some tears.  Darn!

John was a friend.
I hope that the "Go Fund Me" account eased some of his worries.

This one really hits home. John was just a great, kind, humble, loyal man, and a sincerely good friend. We spoke at length about two weeks ago, and he told me that he was hopeful that there might be something that would put his cancer in remission. He was even enthusiastic about possibly getting back to building and flying...

From our conversation I could tell that John had been doing a lot of soul searching, and he seemed to be in a peaceful place. I want to thank all those who contributed to John's Go-Fund-Me fund; he acknowledged that it was a huge help in his life and that he was very grateful to all those who contributed. Thanks also to Rich Peabody for alerting us that there was such a fund for John.

Can't you just see John walking out onto that big flying field in the sky with his Chevelle in one hand and a jug of fuel in the other and getting in line to fly with Bob Gieseke, Bob Palmer, George Aldrich, Lew McFarland, Gene Schaffer, Ed Southwick, and all the other greats who have passed from this existence?

Rest in God's Good Peace good and faithful servant - Bob Hunt

Very sad news.  I never met a John face to face, but we became good friends via facebook.  Rest in peace a John.

Yes John was one of the rare ones and will be missed.  Him and his girl friend saved this old man from being a drowned rat at a past NATS.   Never could thank him enough for that. :(

John and I have been pals since the 1980’s

On July 12, Grady Widener and I took a quick one day in/out trip to Austin Tx to see John.  As an added bonus his father Jack also joined us.  We all spent a few hours together in an airport eatery visiting and chit chatting.  John was in good spirits, but was very weak.  He was about to begin hospice.

I’m glad I made the effort to “show up” and spend a little face time w/ John.

Attached is a photo I took.

John was a skilled builder and flyer and a loyal friend.  I will miss him greatly

Sad news on the loss of another fellow hobbyist.  Did he compete with a blue Hawker Hunter at the 2000 or 2001 VSC?

John was a great modeler, flyer, and most importantly, friend. I spoke with him a few times recently, and only wish it could have been more. I will truly miss him.

Rest in peace my friend,

Derek

John brought his dad's Hawker Hunter to one of the VSC's.  2000 or 2001 sounds right.

John will be dearly missed! John was married about a month ago to Joy Taylor before he passed.
I spoke to his wife Joy an hour ago,and asked her if anyone that would like to send a card, could do so,if it would be OK, to post her address on Stunt Hanger. She said absolutely!
Here is her address-

Thanks. Now I have a name to go with the photo. I remembered seeing the construction article in a magazine but wasn't sure on the name.
