The first models I ever built were the Spede-Buily ff.  My father had a friend that was a c/l flyer and we would go watch him fly.  He took me to the Nats at Glenview and I was hooked'  My firstc/l kit was an AJ Firecat with a McCoy .35.After that it was a series of Flying clowns attempting inverted flight.  Then into 1/2a with my son and the rest is just more of the same.  I build mostly from plans and always want something different from the other guys.  now after 70+ years I am still trying to get inverted..
