Nomenclature Proposal
« on: February 20, 2015, 07:30:17 PM »
We need a better way to differentiate between electric stunt and internal-combustion-engine-powered stunt, which Mr. Buck recently called "conventional".  I propose we adopt the nomenclature used for guitars: "electric" vs. "acoustic".  These names are more applicable to stunt powerplants than they are to guitars anyhow.

Can I get an amen?

What is wrong with saying engine and/or motor?

Because engine and/or motor are both commonly used to describe electric motors and/or internal combustion engines.

I like "'lectric" and "slime", myself.

I believe that in some circles, tail dragger landing gear is still called "conventional".

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

It is.  We looked into conventional landing gear for airliners.  Merely using that name was inadequate to give the proposal credibility.

Howard...I'll give you an Amen brother. ;)  The only problem I see when the different powerplans are being capaired to geetars is that the electrics are usually noisey and the acoustics are usually the quite ones.  Just the opposite of a stunt power plant.

I am behind the times with a learning curve in front of me. The motors and batteries I saw at various times a few years ago are now something else with a new nomenclature.. mw~ Dennis, Kenny and Bobby were guiding me a bit. Pete Bergstrom sent me a power 15 or something a few years ago with a timer and battery...sounded weak for a Chevelle. Lost those the in storage wars and move to the southwest in 2011. Eric's stuff sounds canned weak and limited. IS there a pattern for electric power in CLPA E power plants and batteries....seems everyone is searching for the grail....again.

Gimme two old revamped PA 61s and a "slightly smaller bird" on RE muffler, 26 thou deck, a #6 fuel post venturi and I think I could make decent ponies for the job.. at 6 oz. fuel.

I've been flying 'acoustic' off an on since 1985  ;D
However, only the newest -still to be completed- has electric up front.....

I've been struggling with them noisy Coustics all my life.  n~
Since I have found out how to work the 'Large diaphragm condenser microphone', all I'd do from now will be A-Coustics.  #^

...but ENGINE implies it runs on HEAT while MOTOR implies that it is changing energy states, such as electricity or compressed air (co2, whatever) to rotation.

A rose by any other name...

I have no problem with Howard's proposal, but everyone will still use whatever language they choose to differentiate between the two. I just say electric or glow; we don't currently have steam, nuclear, or even chipmunks-on-a-turntable propulsion in stunt (although that may change...  %^@), so there shouldn't be a problem.

Perfect, and each are terms that are already recognized and in common use. y1

If everyone would just use "real" engines we wouldn't have this problem. :##

As long as that means I get to throw an Ibanez Tube Screamer in front of my electric set-up, I'm okay with that.  ;D

While clearly in the minority, I agree 100% with this statement.....
Motors for CL have wires with electricity going to them, Engines for CL have liquid fuel for combustion going to them.

That is why "Motorman" confuses me! He should either fly all electric, or change his name to "Engineman", LOL!  n~
