Where do you get this stuff anyway...
« on: May 09, 2021, 08:17:34 AM »
I am in the process of replacing my electric stuff.  In my planes prior lives I had nothing but Cobra/Castle/Huben rigs.  However, Crist Rigotti let me fly his Pathfinder earlier this year with an Active Timer and I was amazed at the difference.  So, I am going that route.  Problem seems to be where that route is.  I have read till my eyes ache searching for the where and gave up.  All of the electric folks around here use the Spin xx ESC and Igor's timer.  I can find the Spin 66 but it seems they use the 44 Non Pro which I can't find.  I can find the Fiorotti timer which no one here uses but not Igor's which everybody does.  So:

1. Where does one order Igor's timer.

2. Where does one order a Spin 44 ESC and why does everyone recommend the 44 when the motor(s) we use are 50+amps?  (BadAss/Cobra 3515/3520).

3. Since Igor's timer does not require an expensive ESC is there a better option?

Thanks

Igor sells both the timer and the ESC, the latter with the correct version of the firmware for our application.

Last email I have for him is :

***removed, see below ****

44 amps is enough, because we typically run less current than that:

 Quick calculation:

2.8 amp - hours = 168 amp minutes

6 minute flight is 168/6 = 28 amps average.

In reality we run less than that, because we only discharge to ~80%, and fly a bit more than 6 minutes.

I think others are using Castle ESC with Igor's timer, but the timer was developed using the Spin.
You need an ESC that has a governor mode that matches the PWM to a specific frequency, is responsive to rapid changes in the speed command, and also has brake available in governed mode.
AFAIK, none of the cheap ones have that sort of governor mode.

Ken, simply post me PM, it is easy, I can give you more details about usage, links etc.
more is also on maxbee.net page

Pat wrote that 44A is eanough, it depends on model, weight, prop etc. I highly recomment 66A version. We are well below curent limits as Pat calculated, that rating is for full power run, but we use ESC full time in partial throttle (governor mode) and it brings lot of switching loses and it can overheat ESC, especially with strong boost/brake mode. Overheated ESC can cut off power and it can cost you model.

44A ESC are good for twins or contra props.

Active timer does need quick ESC, I found Jeti Spin best for that. The difference to PRO version or to other types is, that classic SPIN was modiefied for C/L in its HELI 3D mode in past and newer PRO version does not contain modes anymore, so heli 3D mode is gone and PRO version is slower than old non PRO.

Based on Ken's post I was thinking that 44 was the "standard"

I should have known it was the 66 :-[
Mine is in the model, and I just don't think about it anymore because it works.

I almost thought when I posted to send it to Ken by PM instead.
I should not have been lazy and done it.
Next time for sure!
