I love my electric ships!!!It's easy to load up and just go even when it's a chilly 35 degrees.Nice and sunny,5 or less,downwind was away from the sun so I went flying this afternoon.Ready to try out my new CF 13x4EP's but I wanted to put up a few with the APC 13x5.5EP's first.I am starting to experience my own wake and noticed it on the first couple flights.Nothing to bad so I did'nt pay as much attention as I should have on the third flight........While thinking the first two loops looked nice and round it got to the top of the third and my freshly rebuilt E Magnum did some sort of lumchevak thing,removed(Ripped) the handle from my hand,and the safety thong pointed her down to a deep penatrating THUD. n~ n~ n~ n~ WHAT just happened????? Hopefully I will learn a lesson about payin' attention even when things appear to be running smooth.I must be flying better to have this happen 3 flights in a row,now all I have to do is figure out walkin' backwards LL~ LL~ LL~ It hit so hard the nose went in almost to the leading edge.The wing broke in two and the nose snapped off.The battery was still plugged in and halfway in the ground.No battery fire.The motor could not be seen except for the 3 wires that come out the back!!!After a few minutes of careful digging I got it out with about 9" of fuse still burried in the mud.
I thought a few of you guys might enjoy my flight lesson for the day.It may spark a memory or a smile.Or maybe a poem for my dear departed Magnum from the "JIve Combat Team".Anyway it was a great day of flying even with the THUD and the MUD.I'd do it again tomorrow if not for the 6" to 10" of snow they have forecast y1 y1 y1 See ya's Trax

Be sure to rinse all of the mud out of the venturi before you try to start that motor again.
(Seriously, now would be the time to learn how to disassemble and reassemble that brand of motor, with maybe a thorough cleaning and bearing check in between).
The one nice thing about flying in March as opposed to August is that in August when the leading edges are resting on the grass it's 'cause the nose is pulverized. In March (around here, at least) it's 'cause the engine or whatever is buried deep but generally undamaged. Sometimes you can even rebuild the plane.

Tim,I will gladly take your advice and carefully clean and disassemble it.It's a Great Planes Rimfire .46/4260 800kv with 5s pack.I bought it a couple years ago and started the Magnum conversion and it got bumped aside.The Magnum was 76 oz. with the battery but this motor hauled it like nobodys business.I took great care when I dug it out not to turn it or get any more crud in it.Unfortunately there was some collateral damage.The impact killed a worm,half was at the top of the hole and the other must be at the bottom with the disbris from the prop.

Electric motors suck the electrons in via a red header tube. The exhaust is much the same, only it's gotta be black. LL~ LL~ LL~

That is a major bummer!!! About 65 years ago I had the down line part on a model and I was able to save it by letting the lines go slack during the climbs of the inside loops that followed. I have occasionally wondered if it would not be better to have the safety thong attached to the upper part of the handle rather than the bottom. Granted the bottom attachment is more convenient but, given the amount to time and effort that goes into building a model, having the thong virtually guarantee a crash if you loose grip on the handle seems a bit extreme. I suppose it can be argued that it is a matter of saftey -- still I wonder.

Altho it hurt seeing all the time and effort I took trying to make it look nice I still prefer the outcome to what might have happened.I fly in a field by an industrial area and it's usually deserted but it was shift change and for 20 minutes or so there were a few people around.They are plenty far enough away but I have really stupid bad luck sometimes.I don't get around very well and don't know if I could save it even if it were on the up line.Good thing I try to put my thong on every flight even practicing.The bright side is I get to build another ship!!!!

I never had any luck running backward trying to save a plane from doom. I agree with Will, quit flying when it's cold enough to see your breath.

Yuck that sucks. Some lessons are HARD learned!
Did you toast the power system? Did it disconnect anywhere at impact?
One more thing, the thin blade 13x4.5EP is much better for making earthworm sushi. Kinda looks like elbow macaroni.

Dennis,Nothing cooked that I could see.Everything stayed connected until I was able disconnect it.Access was really easy.The nose stayed in the ground after I pulled the wreckage from it.The motor was the pain in the buttocks to get dug out.I hav'nt tested anything yet but I will check it out in a day or so.Trax

Not sure the boxers would help.When it's cold my landing gear usually stay pretty retracted. H^^
