Smallest battery pack you used for a Ringmaster in OTS?
« on: November 09, 2020, 08:54:08 AM »
Just a question for the group, what is the smallest battery pack (motor and prop) you have used in an electric S1 Ringmaster for the OTS pattern? I'm trying to save as much weight as possible, currently planning a 4S-2200mah Thunder Power lite.

You should be able to fly an ots Ringmaster on a 4s 1500.
Pat Johnston flys the regular pattern on his Shark 402 on that size setup.

The problem I have is that from the available battery packs TP only offers a 1350mah or 2200mah in this range. Others that offer a 1500 or 1800 all weigh more then the TP 2200 (197 gm ~6.7oz), some are close but not less. So why give up the headroom. These are all 4S packs around 25C.

MM,
What motor/prop package would work with the 3S 1350?

My S-1 Ringmaster was built and setup by Tom Morris.  He provided or recommended everything except the Timer.   What he provided me with was a Cobra 2221/10 KV1500.  For the battery he recommended (and I bought) the Hyperion 3S 1600mah 70C battery.  With connector it weighs 4.96 oz.  I am running a APC 9 x 6 EP prop at 9000 rpm and a KR timer.
So far all my flights have been 4 minute flight.  I don't remember what the charger put back was but as best I remember I had plenty of room for a 5 minute flight.  60' lines.   Plenty of power.   Pulls good even over the top.

Pat Johnston flies his similarly sized 28oz (w/battery installed) Shark 402 on a Park 480 sized motor (Arrowind 2810) using about 900-1100 mah from a 1550/4s battery.
I think he has mentioned using a APC 10-6E prop.  I am not sure on the line length, but I would expect that he would fly that size plane on about 60ft.

I think I can get the ship ready to fly in the 30oz. ish range (base ship is 22oz.) with a better motor/battery selection. I was looking at the HobbyStar 2216 (2836) 1120kV, good for 380W at 67g (2.36oz.). The Hyperion G8, 3S 1800mah is 138g (4.87oz.). This give me 22+2.36+4.87+1.25 = 30.48 ok pretty close maybe can find a little lighter battery but this should work to start. What do you guys think?

The larger 35mm can diameter (Park 480 sized) motors give a bit more torque for a similar weight.  You might look at some of the inexpensive 2808(3530) 1100KV motors out there.

I think I am going to try using the Thunder Power 5S  1350mah pack with the HobbyStar 2808 motor and start with a APCEP 9x6. The TP is on sale now for Black Friday (code is BF2020) half price so worth a try. It will be a little less efficient but will save more than 2 oz. which on the Ringmaster is really important. I will keep a close watch on the temperature and start with short flights to see if them motor gets to warm.

The HobbyStar 2808 came in and boy does it look small. I looked at the whole package again and I ordered a 2814 -950kV which should be a better fit. So we wait. I did get the TP 5S 1350mah for the Black Friday sale.
