What is governor gain?
« on: November 07, 2010, 06:00:04 PM »
OK in a previous post about windup, it was suggested to increase gain and response time.
Can someone explain "gain" and I could find no listing for response in throttle setup on my Castle ESC
is it Spool up rate?
Thanks

Paul,

Gain pertains to the governor mode - the gain is the repsonse to changes in the load on the shaft (I think) a lower gain means it takes more of a change (of load) for the ESC to up/down the power.

If you have the gain set high - the ESC will change the power up/down with little difference from normal  (ie a wind gust, or you not flying dead level)

I see Dennis A setslow gain - and likes it - whilst others have saaid "go high"  I am about to try the high setting to see what it does.....if no good - I might go back down a bit - I'll let you know

There are actually some really good posts on here about it - .....search on PWM ......I did that today...

Hi Wynn, this is Rodrigo, from Brazil, I was looking for some info about governor mode in Castle esc and found this post! Do you have new info about you experience with esc configuration?

I´m trying to fly a T-rex here, I bought some chinese motors (tow turnigy, a kd???, a e-max), batteries from Turnigy, FM-9, Ice-lite-50 a great mess.... I´m planign to buy some better engine, like a AXI in the future...

This is my t-rex...

Thanks!

Hi Rodrigo - I can help you out with the ESC settings - what do you need to know?

I used to run a Turnigy 3548-900 in my T-Rex - but have swapped it out for a Scorpion 3026-890 - the turnigy flew OK - but the quality was pretty poor - the Scorpion is a lot better.

anyway - if you let me know what you need help with - I'll post a reply.

Hi Wynn, I just don´t know exactly how to configure the esc / timer. I read some other posts here in Stunthanger, but I´m flying use the simple governor mode, and the throttle mode into the fm-9. I think it´s ok, until now I only performing loops, as I´m getting used with the plane/brushless...

But I´d like to understand and setup the esc/timer correctly. Do you use the "set rpm" into the esc?

What is "Phoenix set rpm" mode in fm9? and the phoenix high rpm?

I think I´d like to have the governor mode, but to change the rpm into the field, due to wind conditions, for example...

Thanks a lot!!!!

Rodrigo,
I've gone though the same motor setups as Wynn, turnigy first(35 48 900) and then the scorpion. This plane frustrated me for a long time as it never had the power that my SV11 generated even with the scorpion.
I tried flying mine on flightmax 4000(same place that turnigy come from) and had no luck. I was convinced this was a 5cell plane and ready to give up on it!! At the end of the flying season here in NYC I decided to try my hyperion G3 4s4000 in it with the scorpion motor and this plane came alive!!! In this case the "budget" batteries would not do the job. It was not the motor. I set my gov gain to between 30-35 on all my castles. One plane I go as high as 50 with no problems and may move them all to 50 as I look for a fast Gov response.
We need to know a little more about your set up. What prop? Exactly what battery? Exactly which Turnigy motor? This is a great flying plane when setup right!! Others have told me that they too have had problems with this plane and "budget" ECL setups.

Rodrego,

I'll PM you with my Castle Settings when I get home.

I have the gain set to low (per castles recommendation for outrunners) - here is another good thread on settings
http://stunthanger.com/smf/index.php?topic=19492.0

the timer is the easiest thing to set up - once you have set your ESC to governor "high" you select the Phoenix High Governor mode - set your desired RPM and go fly.  pretty easy.

Hi Wynn, I think I understood your setup, but can you send me your castle settings?

Hi William, I´ve flow with a emax bl2826 (arrowind), but I think this motor is small for this plane... I had a problem with this engine... my fault, and decided to exchange for this one...

KD 36-12XL Brushless Outrunner 770Kv EQ: 2826/12

The battery is a turnigy 20-30c, 3300 mah, 4s, APC 13X4,5

I think Wynn had the answer that I was looking for! he told me to put the ESC into governor "high" select the Phoenix High Governor mode and set the desired RPM!

I will try it!

Oh, I was almost forgeting the cg, my trex came a little nose heavy, but I think there is no other solution than to put some pb at the tail.... do you have another  idea? If I could split the battery in two... one half below and another above the wing...

Thanks a lot!
