Two new products from RSM Distribution
« on: October 23, 2015, 06:25:09 PM »
Please check RSM Distribution's Vendors Corner for the announcement about two new products needed for ECL.

The first is a JST-XH balance board for use with your charger. This helps to plug your balance plug into the charger for those who use batteries with the XH balance plug and lets you place the battery in the Lipo Safe Charge Bag.

The second product is a "No Spark" Arming Switch.

I believe you hold the switch down when you arm the system to stop the sparking happening at the connection.
Not needed on 4 cells as they only put out a small spark.

(The sparking causes pitting and therefore a bad connection.)

I covered what the push button does in the Vendor's Corner as I did not want to take up a lot of space in this part of the forum.

Russ is correct that the spark causes pitting and that it is small in 4 cell applications.

What the spark also does is send a surge of current down line. This surge hits the capacitors in the ESC when they are cold. It can cause the ESC to kick back to the factory defaults. The surge can also mess up the computer control code in the more sophisticated timers that govern rpm, soft start, prop strike shut down and power increases when you go into a maneuver. The "surge" will not do this every time but when it happens it simply ruins you day of flying! Simply adding in the small resistor and push button you can stop it from ever happening to you. That is certainly a "good thing" to my way of thinking and why I wanted it added to the units I sell.

This looks like a solid, good system.
I however, prefer a more minimalist approach.
9 years ago I started out with Deans, but I liked 4 mm bullet connectors better, also over other dual contact types.

I'm adding just one item in the chain, the spark suppressor...

Made from a male & female bullet connector, a piece of hex brass rod, a resistor and some shrink tubing.
Drill the hex brass bit with 4mm length wise. Cut off a piece about 8 mm long.
Solder both connectors in series (I'm using a tiny bit of heavy, solid copper wire), cover the female part in shrink tubing.
Measure the OD of that part and drill with that diameter into the hex brass rod until just a few mm of 4mm diam. stands left.
Solder one end of the resistor to the outside of the brass.
Push the female end all the way into the hex bit, solder the other end of the resistor to the male bit , cover the whole unit in shrink tubing and you're done. I'm leaving the suppressor on the ESC lead and plug in the battery.
Because this connection is outside the fuselage, I also don't need another arming plug. Too many chances of something going wrong.
Flight tested this outfit over quite some years now and I can say I'm happy with it.

Ned -- Very nice work!

This is another example of how folks come up with different methods of solving the same problem. In my opinion anything that works is good.

For those who like what Ned did and have the time to make their own arming switch I say "go for it". For those who either do not have the time or simply do not want to mess with this I say "buy it from RSM". Either way you will get something that works for you and that's what our hobby is all about.

And then we can have two buttons to push to fly. Cool.

I'll fix you up with a checklist.
