New Electric Stunter
« on: December 01, 2012, 01:28:39 PM »
Just thought I'd show a couple of photo's of my new (in process) electric stunter, thereby proving my slow conversion to the "Dark Side".

It's 650 Sq in and a much modified Bear built from scratch.  I'll try to show some photos of the electric components installed later (when I finally figure out where all this stuff goes) n~.

Well, first off, Randy, it's not the "Dark Side" (apologies to Eddie Wilson and Frank Ridgeway...), it's the "Electric Light" side!

Imagine what Pappy Meriwether would say now if he could see what we are trying to fly.   Plane looks great.

I know Howard...it is shocking...I may actually lose some face over it...Not that I had very much to begin with.

Hi Doc,
Actually Byron was always ready to try something new.  I've missed him for a long time...

Actually Byron was always ready to try something new.

He once lost his trousers running after a rat racer to pit it.  At the next contest he tried suspenders.

Just watching Byron run, cigar and all, was funny enough.  He chased a bunch of rats and combat ships for me...great guy.
Once, probably about 1960 after I finished second in open combat at a Wichihawks contest (about 30 entries in single elimination), he walked up to me, after pitting for me, and handed me a brand new Johnson Combat Special and said here..now don't get a big head I'm just tired of trying to keep those %###@# old K&B's of yours running.

Actually Bob...It's all your fault!  Without your success and guidance I probably would never have been tempted to wander from my PA's and Belko's.
Innovators like you can never leave well enough alone...Hmmmmm...I guess that's a good thing.
Thanks...I think.  H^^

Great Randy!

Looking around in the background of your pix - looks like you have a lot of other cool works in progress. Looks like my shop except yours is neater...

Jeez Dennis,
If my shop is neater than yours then you're really in trouble.  I thought I had the messiest shop around anywhere.

Yeah I'm not particularlly proud of it but what you see there is only the tip of the iceberg.  In progress is a Tempest II, Fury, Collossus, No name yet with Saturn wing. Hawker Hunter, and three free flights.   Too many airplanes and not enough time.

I sorta set all that aside after flying a couple of electrics belonging to friends, to build the electric "sorta Bear".

John,
Well it's sorta a Bear though I doubt Bob G. would claim it.  It's built from scratch with Bear Plans on the table but the wing has a more blunt airfoil, the fuselage is extended to give 17.75 inches hinge line to hinge line, and the Stab and Elevator area is increased to 26%.
The construction is pretty much Bear except for the fuselage changes to accommodate the electric installation which is an Eflite 25, Castle 45 ESC, Hubin FM9 timer, and Hyperion 4S 4000mAh Lipo packs.

I'm hoping for about 58oz weight and so far it looks good...guess I'd settle for 60 or so.

The photos are about a month old and there is actually a little more progress now than shown in them.

Oh yeah, the shop is a lot messier now also.

I remember the time he was flying balloon bust and the trousers went down.

And the last time I got to talk to him and show him Randy's picture at Tuscon,  he started telling stories.   Too bad I didn't have a tape recorder and moe time.  He is still missed.

Well,
I can imagine the stories if they included me.  For a bright kid I did a lot of really stupid things.  HHMMmmmmmm...well maybe not such a bright kid.   LL~ LL~
Yeah I miss a lot of those guys during that time...but mostly Byron.

Randy,
Looking good. Bob G had many iterations of the "Bear". He had tail moments as large as 21". I think he settled on a little shorter, but I don't know what his last "Bear" was at.

Randy,
I just talked to Mike Scott. He confirmed that Bob's latest "Bears" had a 19" tail moment hinge to hinge.

Thanks Tom.
Yeah, I had some correspondence with Doug Moon about changes to the Bear and that's where some of these changes came from...with my stubborness super-imposed on them of course.

I've already decided that my next electric will be a GeoXL...yes I can build it light enough!
