Which Cobra motor/battery combo would be good for a Trivial Pursuit (660 sq. in.)?

I like Cobra 3520/14 700kv.  You can use 5 cells or 6 depending on the prop, plane weight...  6 cell 2700's work well.

Read a bit here about some other Cobra's.

Fred, which prop are you using with the 5s and 6s setups?
Thanks.

With 5 cells I used APC 12 x 6 F2B which is under cambered and acts about like a calculated 6.7 pitch.  Regular 12 x 6 will work also.  If you go much under 6 pitch you will run out of rpms on 5 cells and 65 - 66" lines.  With 6 cells I use the APC 13 x 4.5 F2B which is under cambered and acts like about 5.5 pitch rpm wise. I also tried a regular 13 x 4.5 without under camber and turned about 11,400 rpm and not much headroom left for gain. The 13's were cut to 12" to better fit my landing gear and conserve battery amps.

I have seen the 3 blade Canadian carbon props work well on 6 cells and about 67' lines.

OK so, Cobra 3520/14 700kv or AXI 2826/12 760kv, Hyperion G6 2800mah 6S, Graupner 12x6 or APC 13x4.5 F2B cut to 12."

I have a Hubin FM9 and a Castle Creations edge Lite 50 will they work or is there something better?

Thanks,
MM

I see Hubin FM9 and Castle ESC at contests and they work well.  I am using KR.  Not sure why you threw in the AXI as it wasn't discussed, but it seems to be very good in the smaller range of motors such as similar sized Cobra's.  I am not sure how it will do with long lines, 65 oz+ airplanes.  Heat may be a problem as you push the smaller motor, but I have not used one.  I haven't seen the Cobra extra weight be much problem on that size airplane.

Thanks Fred, It's just something I saw on similar airplanes in the "List your set up section". Thanks for the heads up that it's smaller and might get hot. Don't need any of that action. The Cobra is less money anyway.

Doesn't the KR timer have a feature where it gives more power uphill and less power down hill? I don't think the Hubin timer does that. Seems like a tremendous advantage.

KR adds some rpm/gain via the timer-governor.  Hubin has a timer and then uses the functions of the Castle ESC for gain and settings.  I believe the only feature unique to KR is shut down for prop strike/stop so that you don't risk a burn up of electronics. I fortunately have not tested that yet.  It does not stop for a minimal nose over where the prop is buzzed to shorter, and I have experienced that.

My timer has a differential gain feature that adds feedback gain when the system is loaded, as in a hard corner, so you get a bit of a boost. It cannot back-off on the down hills however, because it does not uses a position sensor of any kind. The only system readily available that can add rpm going up and back-off going down, is the one sold by Igor Burger that uses a 3-axis accelerometer with some fancy software.

The shut down feature is quite unique and triggers if the rpm suddenly goes below a certain percentage. This also depends on how much power the overall system has of course, so I would guess that in Fred's case his system was powerful enough to grind the prop without dropping much rpm. On take-off in long grass I recommend that the model be held back until the motor spins up and kicks into governor mode because it cannot shut down while it's spooling up.

If you have any more questions then just shout.

I should have said sanded the prop.  Only about 1/8" inch with a slight buzz when the tail lifted slightly on release, not really nose over.  Probably not fully spun/spooled up as described.  Mine works great, and Keith has been a great resource, as well as Eric.

Check line length on those as well.

I use a Cobra 3520/12 on my Predator. It works in combination with the 6S 2700 battery, and Igors system, with his 3 blade. I want the extra KV for certain boost conditions.
