Title: Steps for discharging a battery

Can someone take me thru how to discharge a lipo using the discharge feature on a charger. Aka putting a battery in storage mode. I think I screwed up my first battery attempting it.

I suggest not ... strongly as a matter of fact.
And it depends on which charger you are using, for sure.

Most chargers have pretty low current limit or wattage limit on the discharge function (generally about 1/10 of the maximum charge wattage), so if you use the charger to discharge, it wouldn't make any difference if you hook up two in parallel or just a single - if you hook up two, it will still take twice as long as one battery, the same as if you hook them up one at a time.

I have the Turnigy.
Discharge 1-5A

Here is what I did.

1. Hooked up the battery - both the power plug and the balance plug.
2 . Set to discharge.
3. Changed the amps to 1 amp. (It was set to 12v)
4. Pressed start.

This is a 3000 mha battery 4s.
I found a few utube videos. Said take them down to around 3.2v per cell.
I am monitoring the voltage on the charger per cell.

I am a little displeased that both my charger and batteries came without instructions. The menu's are ok on the charger and i see how to cycle thru the setting but nothing about how to connect the batteries and use the charger.  HB~>

If not for you guys and YouTube i would have killed more batteries.

Cycle through your charger and you will find a storage mode. If you are taking down fully charged batteries that you charged and didn't fly you can parallel them. If not then do them separately. I can tell you right now that your charger will never discharge a 4 ell lipo at 5 amps. Maybe one amp tops. That's one of the reasons I always recommend the better chargers to people.(probably the main reason). I have a Turnigy Eco 6, 200Watt charger that I keep as a back up. I'm sure it as the same menu's on it. If you want to call me sometime tomorrow I will walk you through the menus.

If these are fully charged packs I would suggest another step. Replace your flight prop with a substitue at least 2" smaller, chain the airplane to a tree stump start it up and let it run.  That will burn-off most of the charge.  Then take the pack out and plug it into your charger in the "STORAGE" mode.  If you do it this way you will only have to burn off a couple hundred mah to get into the 3.7V per cell storage condition - saves a LOT of time!

Like Will D says there are darn few chargers that will discharge at a usable rate - and I do not own any of them!  I have been discharging packs on airplanes then storage-discharging them on the GT-A6 or Accucel-6 chargers I have.  I have intentions of building a couple dedicated discharge stands for different cell counts using left-over motors and ESC's that allow me to manually set the cut-off voltage to 3.8V per cell.

Yea the best way is to run the motor.
Flying the paks for 5:45 on my Tutor almost leaves them with a storage charge.  ;D
