Beautiful work on that Ares.   And Ty that where I learned it from.  Just now remembered you are older than I am. May we keep breaking age records. H^^

Old is a state of mind for grownups - when did any of us grow up?

Rudder now installed. Next is install landing gear and add the last of the ribs around the landing gear.  At that point it will be ready for some silk span.  PS I am older than dirt but I am still looking down at the dirt not up at the dirt.  LL~

I am ready to start finishing this aircraft. Ty  Do I need to use Non-Tautening Butyrate Dope to prep the wood work?  PS Ty is going to help me cover this aircraft.

Well Ty has agreed to cover and paint my 59 Ares.  So as the monkey said when he got his tail cough in the lawn mower  "It won't be long now!"   LL~

Sat progress; Both flaps and elevators covered in silk span, top nose block and cowl also covered.. 4th coat of clear on rest of fuselage and wing LE/TE/tips.  Had to quit early as standing is hard on my back since surgery late May.  More tomorrow. H^^

Sunday and more progress.  Fuselage completely covered, both wings covered, but may have to do a recover on one tip. At any rate, tomorrow tautening dope on the wings, sanding and doping the fuselage, then the hardest part, coming up with a paint scheme.  It will be as per Johns instructions, basic white.  I have some ideas, but until I lay them out on the actual model, one never seems satisfied..all part of the hobby. It was going great until I messed up the canopy, so I ordered two from Brodaks. With two on hand, you never mess one up, but if you only have one....... LL~ D>K H^^

The primer I am using is "Iron Armor" brand from Harbor Freight, Item 60789, Sandable Primer.

Yep, good old silk span.. Two tiny corner wrinkles that will be gone by the time I apply color dope.. D>K

Applied damp, first coat of dope is tautening, then 4 thin coats of non tautening, final coat of clear is sanded with 1000 grit. For some reason it cuts the dope better than 400, which I use  on the primer. H^^

It's good to see another "old doper" at work, Ty. And, not two, do it exactly the same.  Have not used "dope" since my I.C. days pre 1998, when I converted completely to electric. Since, I just use reg hardware store lacquer(Watco) for silkspan and Poly Span. I miss the days when we could purchase a sleeve of 00, GM or SGM for 4 bux.  I should have stocked up better.

Well, when you have literally a gallon of this and that, you use it up.  Three of my elelctrics are covered in Krylon or Rustoleum (which I hate).

Got the first coat of white on this afternoon...sanding lightly tomorrow and then a second coat of thinned white.. Just enough to cover the gray primer.

Ty E-mailed the following:  "HI John.  I have finished the base white coats, just need some trimming.. Red and blue stripes are on the wing, doing the stab later."  SO it wont be long until a test flight.   #^   #^

Well the 59 Ares is ready for first flight.  Right now it's to hot for an 83 year old.  But hopefully soon.   #^  #^

PS.  Thank you Ty for all your help in building this model.  Great job on the Silkspan covering and paint job.

I flew my 59 Ares today.  It flies great.  The Bad Ass motor is strong. The airplane pulls like a bear even during a wingover.  Wings were level.  All I did was loops.  They were round and smooth.  Now for the bad news.  I am 83 years old.  I have a bad back and one bad knee. I am staggering around in the circle like I am drunk.  Because of this I did not stay in the middle of the circle.  On the landing I hit my tool/batter sack.  Did minor damage to the inboard wing.  Also because of unsteady footing I dared not go inverted. My flying days may be numbered.  I think this is all the fall out from my car accident April a year ago.  Old age sucks!!!

Anyway a 59 Ares converted to electric is a winner.   #^   #^   #^

I am in the same boat.  Been looking at the swivel chairs.  But my main problem is no vehicle to transport stuff to the field.  Working on a 1/2A set up using the Man Winds from the NW. D>K

A little more info.  On a 4 minute flight charge put back was 1482 on a 4 cell 2800 TP battery.  Looks like it would go 5.5 minutes no problem.  At the end of the run everything was just a little warm.  I also weighed the airplane. It weighs 46 oz.  A little over weight but has gobs of power so it goes like crazy and pulls like a bear.  CG is a 1/2 inch in front of the  high point of the wing.  Very stable and smooth.  Landing was smooth with no bounce (until I hit the tool sack).  y1   y1   #^   #^

[/b] What did you use for a control system?  did you use the horns that come in the kit, or did you use the angled control horns they talk about  in the details on the plan.
Your Ares looks really nice !  I am building one in the Fall, and it will also be electric.

And what brand paint did you use to put the silkspan on , taunting dope, or non taunting?
Things take longer to happen than you think they will,

Then they happen much faster than you thought they could.

Ty covered and painted this model for me.  Per Ty:

"Yep, good old silk span.. Two tiny corner wrinkles that will be gone by the time I apply color dope.. D>K

For control I used the KR timer system from RSM.  However right now RSM is closed de to medical reasons.  Don't know when they will be back on line.  An alternate would be the Clime and Dive controller.  The down side to the Clime and Dive controller is that it requires good soldering skills to build and install.

I will be using Igor’s timer.  Many people  are using the Fiorotti timer with success. What about the control horns and pushrods, what did you use there ? That is what I meant when I said control system.  Did you use the horns that were in the Brodak kit?

Did you use the horns that were in the Brodak kit? - Yes.

I made my own pushrods.  Carbon rods with Tom Morris threaded ends that I salvaged from old crashed airplanes.
