I have an Arrowwind 2820, Hubin timer and a new ESC all from Brodak. occasionally when I push the button at start up instead of the prop spinning the motor will make a squawk sound. I unplug the wires plug them back in and it works normally. Today it squawked at at startup and again in flight on separate flights. After squawking in flight the motor stopped running. There is about 5 minutes between flights using Hyperion 3300mA and one from RSM black tiger set up also 3300mA. The motor feels about 120 degrees. The bearings don't have any rough spots that I can feel. The batteries are barely warm. What is the diagnosis. I have a black tiger set up from RSM I can swap in.

Hello Perry,
Usually, under running conditions, the squawking sound is problem where the ESC cannot stabilize on the necessary commutation timing for how fast the motor is turning at that moment.
It is different than the startup squawk which happens when the startup routine fails.
Maybe you have an ESC problem, though often this happens when the timing setting of the ESC is too aggressive (too many degrees of advance).
Can you adjust the ESC?

Hi Dean, I don't think so, but I don't know much about electrics. I checked the Brodak site and they are using a different ESC now. Before I do anything drastic I'll lower the rpm a bit. Maybe see what it is first then lower it. I'm using the 12 x 6 E prop that came with the system.

Squawking motor symptom happened on two occasions for my setup also. The first one was an entire bearing spinning in the bell housing. I replaced the bearing and used red locktite to hold it in the bell. The other time it squawked at me was when I was playing around with the governor gain in the Castle ESC programming software. Any gain setting above 40 caused it to squeak during the start of a maneuver. I dont know if your particular ESC has adjustable gain, just thought I would throw this out there for you or others that might find this of help when troubleshooting and adjusting an electric setup.

I forgot to mention that the tone thing that beeps at battery plug in just beeps about once per second and nothing else happens.

Just for chuckles, inspect your ESC-to-motor wires. Make sure the bullet connectors are firm, and that the solder connections to the wires are in good shape. I'd be all over the theory that you have a gain set too aggressively, but you haven't touched that.

What about the resistance values in the motor and ESC? Between the wires.

I ordered a new set up from Brodak. When it comes in I'll swap pieces until I find the bad one. I think it's the ESC even though it's new.

I ordered the new parts from Brodak on Friday evening using their web site. The stuff came in today's ,Monday, mail. I installed the new ESC with the old timer and motor and everything worked like it should. I now have a spare motor and timer.

Not surprising. The ESC has the most to do with motor function, timing, & etc. Thanks for sharing. #^

I finally got the chance to fly the new ESC with old motor and timer. Everything worked perfectly. 3 short flights to get the power set and 6 full pattern flights. I'm happy.
