Safest way to change connectors
« on: September 14, 2012, 02:43:37 PM »
I have two batteries that I need to convert to Deans connectors.  I have the new connectors waiting for me to perform the switch over.

Safest way t do it?

Thanks!
Bill

I don't know the safest way to do it, but I solder up one wire, shrink the heat shrink, then solder on the other one and shrink that side.

At no point do I have both wires all stripped and ready to solder (or to weld themselves together).

In order to short the battery leads with this method I'd have to melt all the way through the heat shrink on the first wire.  I suppose that's possible, but I don't think it's probable.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

What Tim said and a couple of pointers:

1) tin the Deans prongs before you start
2) cut one wire free and strip a short bit (about the same length as the Deans prongs)
3) tin the stripped end of the wire.
4) Important: now slide your heat shrink tube down the wire as far as possible
5) solder this wire to the correct Dean's prong
6) slide shrink tube back and shrink over the solder joint
7) repeat with the other wire

A word of warning: Deans plugs will melt and/or deform if you go wild with the soldering iron.

Many folks have found that soldering the wires to "Deans Ultra" can be a bit awkward. You should be aware that there is a product on the market that you solder onto the wires , and it clips onto the Deans and stays there unaided, waiting to be soldered. These  are sold by MAXX PRODUCTS as item number 2818 and are called "EZ soldering coupler for Deans Ultra".

Go to the section "Connectors" and it is page 3 of 3.  I have used them many times with success. They cost $4.99 for 10 pcs.  Keith Varley

I do everything that John said, too, I just forgot to mention it.

I'd go buy those things that Kieth mentioned, but I think it would threaten my manhood.

Just to add to the good advice from John and Tim, what I find helps to stop the pins melting the plastic is to stick another male connector into the Deans socket and clamp it in a vice. Just make sure that the metal pins do not short in any way. Good luck Bill and hopefully you will be flying soon.

I DO NOT recommend "EZ soldering coupler for Deans Ultra". In my opinion they just provide a second point of failure. I feel that those should never be used!!!!!! I saw those fail on one of our country's top flyer's while setting up his plane for a for a practice flight at the Nats. We spent some time later that day removing them from his batteries. A good soldering iron or gun is a MUST!!! Wether you use a gun or an iron you must let it reach full temp before touching any surfaces. I saw a trick on the RC boards that works well. Thoroughly tin the end of the battery wire 1/4" -3/8". Then take a dremel cutting wheel and cut a slot in the wire so it looks like a 2 prong fork. Slide that over the deans and solder. Done right it makes a real neat looking connection. In any case there are many threads on soldering Deans on RGgroups and many videos on you tube.

William   Thanks for the warning. That method of cutting a slot sounds very interesting.I'll be trying that next time .Keith

Thanks for the replies, guys.  I will take all advice and apply it. ;D

Keith R., thanks for the kind thoughts.  I do believe I will be able to fly before long!  I finally got on right right dose of meds for my nerve damage and slowly, day by day, things are getting better!  And soon after I get back in the circle, the timer/governor will get a work out!

Thanks, again, everyone!

Bill,
Watch the video on how to solder Deans connectors on the following Link:

You Tube has several videos on how to solder Deans connectors.
If you do not like how they do it on one video go watch another video.

Good video.  Note that for a battery you want to tin the connector, but just do one lead all the way until the heat shrink is on, then do the other.  For a speed control the way shown is quicker, and there's no power applied so it's safe enough.  For a battery -- be careful!

yep - make sure you aren't using a metal jaw vice with another connector out the oter side to draw the heat away - ask me what happens when the tabs touch the vice -!!!!!   I have been there,

Now - the best thing you can buy to hold your plugs etc is Mr Jig -from Hobbyking - makes soldering easy.   I no longer use Deans connectors - had too many issues - I now use the XT60s - they works great and are easier to solder in any case

Just make sure you don't cut through both wires at the same time when taking the stock connector off the battery.   n1
I know someone who slipped and cut through both wires on the battery at the same time with obviously metal wire cutters.  Luckily it was a small battery.
