South African Nats goes electric
« on: April 10, 2013, 12:43:46 AM »
Hi All, The SA Nats took place last week-end in Johannesburg at the Barnstormers club again. The weather was really good although a bit on the windy side. There were 8 entries in stunt and only one was engine powered. This was the ARF Nobler powered by a Brodak 40.....and the engine would not behave well. The rest of us e-powered types had no problems, except for me putting the same used battery back in my Newtron for my last round (old-timers disease!). The photo below of the stunters has 2 missing, both of them electric Eze-Pro's. One flown by Dennis Bird hit the deck in some turbulence and the other one by Colin Paine from Knysna went home with him when his wife suffered a heart problem back home. I'm happy to say that she is fine now, and Colin was given the opportunity to fly his 4 rounds before he departed to catch a plane home.

The pleasant surprise was from young Roston Dugmore jnr. who flew the Protron take-apart profile into 2nd place, narrowly beating veteran stunt flier Percy Attfield into 3rd place. In fact Percy donated the Protron to the Dugmore's, so this was a nice gesture on his part. Mmmmm.........getting beaten by one of your own planes??? javascript:void(0); I've include a pic of Rostie, as he is known to us. He is a very good pattern flier in fact and will be the SA junior member in the team for the Pattern world champs out here in August. It's great to see kids still enjoying C/L when they do have amazing R/C stuff as well. The other photo is of me with my wife Bokkie and the Newtron that I flew in Bulgaria. It's a simple design powered by an E-Max 282 on a 4-cell 3000 mAh Nanotech lipo turning an APC thin blade 12 x 6 EP. All the electric models are using my KR Governor timer system. I must be a bad influence of the locals.javascript:void(0);

Keith,

I guess I am just lucky.  I am just starting out to learn stunt.  I bought one of you KR timers.  It's the only timer I  own.  Judging from the results above I am headed in the right direction.  Congrats!

I thought that it was because you fly so much and don't have a job, so you can't afford more than one battery!   S?P

Thanks Guys and dolls,

I am indeed very pleased with the governor timer's performance, especially when the non-technical folks find it easy to use and it more than fits the bill. What used to happen through the years is that the pilots from the coast or other low altitude areas come up to Johannesburg (5000 ft. ASL at our club) for the last 20 years, and their engines always battle in the thin air. Now they just switch on and fly and maybe just add a little rpm to compensate for the  thin air.

Besides ragging Igor about his one battery, I need to say thanks again to him for trying to help me to get a better trim on my Newtron. This is not easy when you can't be present to actually test fly it. All I can say is that Igor has a lot of patience with my many questions and that now the Newtron is a lot better than it was. Just taking the motor run out of the equation of trimming sure makes things easier. I think that we tend to forget that issue these days when we get used to e-power. We are a spoilt bunch!

Way to go my friend!  That's one sweet trophy you are holding.  Once again your equipment showed it value.  So you are now the "King of Control Line" in the other land down under.  As for Igor only having one battery, when you fly like that guy does one is all you need.

Well ... I needed some victim for debugging of my upcoming trimming article  VD~

... do not worry, it is not end of the fun, it will come back with active timers  >:D

Congrats Keith, but remember one day I will be coming for that trophy, the only one that has eluded me thus far in South African Control line.

Thanks Andy & Eric for your kind words.

Lionel, I remember telling you that I'm only flying this year to keep you "honest"! The truth is that Maxine (Lionel's wife) phoned me and asked me to fly because your house has no more place for trophies  ;D

Don't worry, my friend.........you'll get your chance. I'm just glad that I didn't coach Rostie!

Thanks Andy, that trophy was donated in 1948 by the Ford Motor Company, so it has always been the one to shoot for. There is a lot of history on that trophy. The other one that goes back to a similar time here is the High Point or Victor Ludorum shield, which means "Winner of the Games". You get your name on this shield for flying in as many categories as you are able to, and of course for scoring well at the same time. Lionel Smith has won this a couple of times already because he competes in racing, combat and stunt. Not only does he compete, he is a tough competitor to beat as well. Just by the way Lionel, Percy Attfield had the shield sorted out now to have all of the missing names added and also space for more years to come. Dennis Bird took the trophy home this time.
