Gas props on electric?
« on: May 25, 2011, 09:35:01 AM »
Right now I have an APC 11x5.5 electric prop on the motor (running on test stand) I plan to use on my LA-5.  It seems to be turning the correct RPMs and I am happy with the amp draw.  I would like to convert to a pusher prop setup.  This should help keep lines tight as slow speeds and veer out (not in) when I pop the throttle to full ON.  The quick throttle change is used in the scale missed approach menuaver.  Looking at pusher electric scale props the selection is slim. APC has 9x6 (to small) and a 11x8 (to big).  However in the standard props (nitro props) APC has a 11x6 pusher and Zinger has a wood 11x6 pusher.  Is there any reason other then more mass not to use a nitro prop on an electric scale aircraft?   ???

Hi John,
It will work as it does on the gas engines, but you will certainly draw more current. I've used a few thinnish wood props and they still draw more current. Have you looked at the ZOAR electric wood props? They make quite a nice selection, although they cost more than the APC's. Her's the link: http://www.xoarintl.com/

John,

APC makes pusher props in 11 X 4.5 and 5.5. They are just not available in the usual stores yet. Go to APC web site to order. But beware, their shipping charges are awful! Cost me $18.00 to ship 4 of those to Florida! These are designated as 11 X 4.5EP & 11 X 5.5EP.

This worked! thanks. $9.29 shipping - not to bad.  4 each 11x5.5 EP is $28.25 total.
