Even the authors of the original paper admit that scaling up this tech will be a big issue because it requires frighteningly precise extremely small scale fabrication techniques.  These problems may well be solved eventually but who knows what that really means.  Could be months, or decades.  Promising though.

I am optimistic that we will continue to see a mix of evolutionary & revolutionary developments.

My Dad built an electric OTS airplane back in the mid 1980's.  It weighted 48 ounces ready to fly of that roughly 30 ozs were in the Nicad pack.  It would give about 3 minutes "quality" time.  Nicads gave way to nimhs, and now with have Lipos.  Personally I am expecting we will be seeing another   leap before much longer.

I bought my first ECL set-up not quite 6 years about.  It included a 10C battery that cost nearly $100 and which had a maybe 50-cycle life (few made it that far)  Today I cannot even buy a battery that crude.  A similar capacity pack today is on the order of $20 with a 25C or 35C  rating and a several hundred cycle expectancy.  That is a lot of progress in 6 years.

There are a lot of smallish improvements being made all the time, as high costs stuff evolves into high quality stuff.  I suspect that today's high $$$ packs will be garden variety within a couple of years, as processes, quality and costs all improve.

THESE are the worst of times - and it is going to keep getting better!

I am optimistic that we will continue to see a mix of evolutionary & revolutionary developments.

While I am generally profoundly cynical about each individual announcement of some cool new technology that just needs a huge infusion of research and/or investment dollars to be ready for prime time, at the same time I think that there's going to be a constant march of refinements, with the occasional leap forward.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Wow,

Not here yet (or for some time to come) but it sure does make one optimistic!! Dr. King seems to have impeccable credentials:

The National Science Foundation and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research supported this work. King also is affiliated with the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology; the Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory; the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory; and the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois, Urbana, IL

Not holding my breath but then.............  ;D

Hi Gang,
I thought you'd find this interesting ...

Granted, this just means the new stuff isn't coming out next week!

take care,
