CC ESC Question
« on: June 27, 2010, 04:05:46 PM »
Hi All,
Quick Question... I've just rebuilt my Electric Ringmaster and had to replace the motor (Previous one destroyed in the crash) and it could do with a few more revs. Unfortunately when I swapped the motor I had a senior moment and forgot to adjust the KV setting in the ESC so it thinks it is running an 1100 kv motor when in fact it's a 1187kv motor. So...

Is it just simple maths to work out what RPM it is actually producing given the kv difference? [ 1100 = ~92.7% of 1187] (After I correct the motor details what do I do with the RPM to give me a few 100 extra rpm from it's current setting given the rpm showing in castlelink is not the true value due to the motor being set incorreclty).

Am I making sense?  ???

Thanks in advance

TTFN
John.

if you change the motor setting to 1187 - and leave the RPM the same - the ESC will do the rest.

Hi Wynn,
So are you saying the RPM setting was "true" despite having the kv of the motor set incorrectly in the ESC? I was expecting the actual RPM to be different to that displayed in CastleLink (By something near 7.3%).

I'm pretty sure ( and I am only new to this to, so I may not be 100%) that once you set the motor up, and put intthe target RPM - then the ESC does all the work to run at the prescribed RPM.........at least that is what I understand anyway........

Hi Wynn,
You may well be correct, The more I think about it (With my "Kindergarten" level of electronic expertise) I would have expected the "Pole Count" to be the method the ESC uses to drive the RPM and the KV of the motor is more related to how the governer works and and it's upper/lower limits.

Either way I guess it should only take me a few flights to get into the ball park now I have corrected the kv. I'll assume the RPM I was getting is "true" and go from there.

Thanks for the advice.

John,

I believe Wynn is correct. If you are using the set RPM (Head Speed) mode in the Control Line Governor feature of the CC ESC, you can set three different (incremental) RPMs and select them using the timer. This will let you try any of the three without reprogramming the ESC. With a Will Hubin timer the selection is easy since you only need to adjust a pot from about 1/4 turn to about 3/4 turn and to fully turned. Other timers are a bit more difficult since you need to set the timer RPM (pulse width) to below 50% throttle, above 50% throttle (but below full) or to full throttle (over 99%) to select the chosen RPM in the ESC.

Of course, the new Will Hubin FM-9 system makes RPM adjustments even easier.

John,

I have been using the Ztron 3 timer with the CC45 ESC for almost 2 years. Recently, I installed a new timer and tried a simple setup were I used the as received defalt settings for all but the "motor start delay" which I set for 20 sec. I set the ESC to "CL Governor - fixed rpm" mode. After entering the motor data through castle link I set the desired rpm (in my case 9100). I have been flying this setup for the past month and am quite happy with the performance. The rpm is pretty close to the set number and very consistant. Once I am close on rpm I trim the lap time with prop pitch (I am using an APC - E 12x6P that I cut to 11 1/2 and repitched to 5.75.

Best,       DennisT
