Shipping Lipo batteries.
« on: July 07, 2017, 07:37:07 PM »
I need to ship 5 LIPO batteries from Tucson To Ogden Utah.  two 4000mAh, and three 3300mAh, all 4S.

Can anyone suggest the best way to do it.  They are new in their original containers with the original storage charge.

I know that a bunch of the rules for shipping LIPO'S changed in Jan 2017, and I'm very confused by the online regulations for mailing and shipping.  Anyone know for sure what's best?

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Look up haz mat shipping on UPS web site

2 years ago I needed to get 1000 22cal rounds of ammo to my brother in Ogden from here in Texas

Fron the web site I learned that I had to go to any true UPS store or shipping office ( the franchise office do NOT do it)

In my case, no non franchise, UPS store but the shipping office was a few towns away and had strange hours for customer service...like 4:30 to 7:30 PM
This was a sort of local distribution hub and the customer service was where folks have to go to physically pick up or ship certain packages

Once in line, when it came my tern with the one lady, I was directed to a on the wall computer and told what form to fill out and print, back in line
My turn, she looked over the form, printed another Haz Mat label, took my package and my money and sent me on my way... IIRC twas a bit expensive...but then 1000 22 bullets are fairly heavy

Randy,
The postal regs. are confusing.  I have shipped some defective batteries back to the manufacturing company at times and the post office was helpful in getting it right.  Shipping has to be by ground.  Package used to have to be marked as LiPo batteries but stating that package contained no lithium metal.  There is a 1000 watt hour limit but you are nowhere near that.  Watt hours = mAh  * V/1000.  The voltage on a 4S  pack is listed as 14.2 V.

Thanks to all who provided information.

Alan, your information was particularly useful, Thanks.

Turns out I have a friend who lives in Maricopa (AZ) and travels often to the Salt Lake area.  He will take them with him in a couple of weeks or so and deliver them to one of the guys in that area...Maybe Gordon Delaney who can get them (I hope) to Brent Williams.  I have to contact these folks and let them know what is happening so if one of you reads this...I'll be calling!

Thanks All.

Randy:

The regulation can be found at www.usps.com. Search lipo batteries and look for Publication 52 Revision: New Mailing Standards for Lithium Batteries

Most important thing to remember is that you must have a "Caution" label on the package. Basically up to 4 lipos not installed and you are OK.
