score conversion
« on: May 21, 2012, 07:10:57 PM »
I have a top flite score  I am thinking of converting to electric , once I repair the damage from the nose leaving the aircraft mid flight. Has anyone out there converted one of these and was it successful or am i wasting my time ?
Cheers
Al

Hey Allen,

where in Aus are you?

yes you can convert the score - whether it is worth it or not is another question that only you can answer.

The Score airfoil is pretty thick and from what I have heard - they are pretty heavy for a stunter - not sure if yours is heavy or not.

anyway - you can definately convert it if you wanted to - what gear are you thinking of using?

Goodaye Wynn,
I live near Adelaide South Australia
the score was 68oz with an ST60 up front so from what i hear it is one of the lighter ones
I will try an e-max2832 which is a cheap 960kv motor with a fm9 hubin timer , an ice50 esc and a 13x5.5 apc prop.If the model flys ok i will change the motor to a Plettenburg

Do you fly with Lars?  He is getting into electrics too.
The combo  you have should be Ok for the Score - I would upgrade the airframe before the motor though  LL~

but if you want a Pletty - I have brand new 20-18 you can have cheap or the 20-16 out of my Yatsenko

I own a Score and let me say it's "Heavy" I mean really heavy!  I have a LA .65 up front to get the job done.  Do anything you can to take weight out of that plane.  That said it is fun to fly!

reconstruction hopeing to get back into it shortly .I will keep you in mind regarding the plet the cheap motor is just for a test bed.Lars is experimenting with electric as are a few others..........personally......i'm hooked i also have a firecracker with a plet up front and it's a great flyer.I should see him

Goodaye Andrew
pity they are so heavy considering it is such a nice looking model , I had a T&LST60 in mine and just as i finally got it trimmed right , it fell apart.Mine was
68oz but flew nicely, unfortunately the repairs may add some weight, i am considering fibreglassing the nose area back together.
cheers
Al

the old swede skyped me last week to ask about ESCs

he's a good old stick - I miss his dry sense of humour around these parts.

Hello Alan
Yes it is a pity, and even as heavy as they are they do fly well.  In dead air they can be nasty when flying through their own wake turbulence.  Mine likes to tumble!  No joke it really does tumble.  Also after about three flights my 66 years old arm and shoulder cry for mercy and that's on 70' lines.  I have had to recover most of the wing, and keep gluing the monocrap back down on the fuselage.  But I just can't bring myself to toss it.  The Score is the kind of plane you take out and practice getting the bottoms down, with no fear of destroying it.  I mean really no fear!  It is probably the only plane I know of that by adding electric you might actually take weight out of the plane.
Good luck with your project.
Andy
