Same old LiPo
« on: September 26, 2023, 06:07:31 PM »
Nearly every day I read about some new kind of battery which, in cars, will double mileage between charge, smaller, lighter, etc.

But the usual suppliers still have the same old LiPo as always.

I still have 4 or 5 good 5-cell battery packs, but they will not last forever.  So when can I expect to find something better then the standard LiPo?

89 years, but still going (sort of)

Much of what you see is lab experiments with high hopes. That is always a decade out, if the experiment, production processes, and costs pan out. Media needs to sell clicks, there is always something new.

Lithium battery tech continues to improve. Molicell just released a sample batch of P30B 18650 cells. There is progress. I flew electric RC with NiCd in the 90's. Remember when LiPo were 5C discharge max? I flew an airplane with 12S6000mAh sample cells back then. Now you can charge some LiPo at 12C and discharge is only limited by what you can dump it through.
