I heard a story yesterday at our field about a RC flyer that dropped a battery in his shop and the battery exploded into a fire ball. Story went that there was so much smoke that he could barely see to sweep it out of the shop with a broom. He then sold all his electric stuff and only flys IC.

The one of the guys in our club told me that he stores his in a ammo box.

Mine are kept in a Polly bag in my hobby room.
How do you store your batteries when not going to use for a few weeks (or longer)

I dont want to put my family at risk with my hobby.

I keep mine in an ammo box in the garage.

I keep mine in a clay pot (non-conductive) covered with a ceramic tile. When charging, I invert a clay pot over the battery under charge and charging is done on a ceramic tile surface. Since I have no garage, the batteries are in my shop in the basement.

Ammo cases in the house (don't have a garage or a workshop) If they work for a pile of tracer bullets, they'll work for lipos.

I'm getting to the point where I think I need a new ammo case, theres too many packs to deal with!

So what type of ammo box?
I did a google search and found that Plano sells a plastic ammo box. Then there are the ammo cans.

For the time being i took a old metel tool box and put tile in the bottom and beaded foam on the sides.

Steel, genuine GI .50 cal ammo can. I keep the charger in there too, just grab and go.

Most of the guys in the Pacific Northwest use fire proof document storage boxes. Available at Lowe's or Home Depot. Mine are First Alert and cost about $25.

I store them in a foam lined hard case with nothing sharp around them. they remain in the case at all times and get transported to the field in that case. the case is always closed and latched unless I am getting a battery out or putting one back.

For charging I have a fire proof safe with a small hole for the balance plug wire and the main wire. The charger sits outside the locked fire proof safe while the battery is inside the fire proof safe during charging.

I saw a video on the safety precautions for lipos and anytime you puncture the outer plastic covering or short the battery wires the result is not good.

They did a demo where they put the Lipo in a flimsy cash box (thin sheet metal with a simple latch) and then shorted the battery. The battery exploded but I found interesting was that the cash box contained the fire ball, but the toxic smoke came out. make sure that what ever item the batteries are charged in can't open if there is a problem. This is why I put my batteries into a fire proof safe and lock it shut.

Paul, these are the ammo boxes I use, I simply strip the layers of paint off (usually many), prime and paint to match the colours of my planes (so I can look cool as the other side of the pillow at the airfield) and line the inside with 3mm foam rubber, just to make sure there are no chances of a short.
