Rack - O - Planes ... or How to burn out a spray gun
« on: March 12, 2013, 11:20:05 AM »
I just put the Crossfire Extreme XLTC back in the rack and it hit me that there are a bunch of planes there ready for finishing. The one in the middle on the left is my Second Wind twin, the one on top at right is Wll DeMauro's Voltron (He's building that ship in my shop), the one in the middle on the right is the Crossfire Extreme XLTC and the one below that is the Rounder. Anyone in the mood to stop over my place and sand some fillercoat? Didn't think so... :-\

Every time I see a picture of your shop I learn something.

How are those racks constructed? Is it PVC pipes under that foam padding or wooden dowels?

Oh, and I volunteer Alan Buck and Ken Armish to sand fillercoat for you.  VD~

Hi Steve:

They are PVC pipes. I tried to find dowels, but could not match up a drill size with an available diameter wooden dowel. The PVC works great and you can get the foam padding in tubes also. Buddy Wieder and I constructed the entire rack and installed it in a little more than three hours.

Alan and Ken just called with a suggestion for something they would like you to do. I don't think it is anatomically possible... but, in any case, I cannot post their suggestion here...  <=

The 5/8" dowels I got from Home Depot are mostly just a little loose in the holes that I drilled with the 5/8" wood bit from Home Depot, sometimes they're a bit tight.

Dowels from Home Depot don't seem to hold close tolerances.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Hi Tim:

Yeah, we had to "swell" the ends of the PVC pipe a bit by tightly wrapping some duct tape around them. We only use enough tape to allow a snug fit into the holes. We didn't want the tape to be sheared from the pipe as we pressed it into the holes in the stacked 2 x 4's. It's been in operation for more than a year with no issues. I occasionally check to see if the pipes are still tight... they are!  y1

Well, Brother Bob, there is an extremely familiar looking Tucker Special leaning back on the right.  And who's P-47 is that? ;D

Hi Bill:

Yup! That's my old Tucker Special, only now it's an E-Tucker! Same for the P-47. That's Billy's Thunderbolt, only now it's an E-Bolt! #^

The Tucker now has an E-Flite Power 15 in the nose and a 2500 mAh Hyperion 4S pack. Nice combo. Billy's P-47 was fitted with an E-Flite Power 25 and a 4S Hyperion 4000 mAh pack. Also a great combo.

Hi Mark:

You have it all wrong: It's you who live all the way over "there."  :)!

It is awesome, indeed.  There are more ideas in that shop than you can shake a stick at.  I got to visit it twice in the last couple of years and was overwhelmed both times.

It would unnerve me to have people shaking sticks in my shop... %^@

Howard liked the foam bricks... Not sure what that says about him for liking them, or about me for thinking them up... ~^ Anyway, he and Mary Lou bought Marianne and me a great Italian dinner! He can come by anytime he wants... #^

Hi Bob

On my visit, I came away astonished at how PRODUCTIVE you are.  By the time I think about it, and talk about it, you have probably already built one or two or three.  This shop is a model of efficiency and so is the guy running it.  ;)

I have a similar rack. I used 2X4s and 1" dowels then used a hole saw to punch holes for the dowels. Nice, tight fit and like bob, used pipe insulation over the dowel.

Man, Bob, don't you finish anything?    LL~

Well when Bobby said sanding is help needed, that let me out.   Talk to all the local guys in my area.   I do not like finishing airplanes.   Love to build or assemble, depending on the plane.

Wish I could do two or three at once. I have one unfinished plane that I will get back to ... and several that need re-finish.

PVC pipe seems to come in funny sizes, but CPVC (the yellow stuff) comes in 1 1/8" diameter.  I have a Forstner bit that diameter.  Gorilla Glue holds CPVC to particle board nicely.

PVC pipe comes in iron pipe sizes and CPVC in copper pipe sizes.
