Rack - O - Planes ... or How to burn out a spray gun
« on: March 12, 2013, 11:20:05 AM »
I just put the Crossfire Extreme XLTC back in the rack and it hit me that there are a bunch of planes there ready for finishing. The one in the middle on the left is my Second Wind twin, the one on top at right is Wll DeMauro's Voltron (He's building that ship in my shop), the one in the middle on the right is the Crossfire Extreme XLTC and the one below that is the Rounder. Anyone in the mood to stop over my place and sand some fillercoat? Didn't think so... :-\

Every time I see a picture of your shop I learn something.

How are those racks constructed? Is it PVC pipes under that foam padding or wooden dowels?

Oh, and I volunteer Alan Buck and Ken Armish to sand fillercoat for you.  VD~

The 5/8" dowels I got from Home Depot are mostly just a little loose in the holes that I drilled with the 5/8" wood bit from Home Depot, sometimes they're a bit tight.

Dowels from Home Depot don't seem to hold close tolerances.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Well, Brother Bob, there is an extremely familiar looking Tucker Special leaning back on the right.  And who's P-47 is that? ;D

It is awesome, indeed.  There are more ideas in that shop than you can shake a stick at.  I got to visit it twice in the last couple of years and was overwhelmed both times.

Hi Bob

On my visit, I came away astonished at how PRODUCTIVE you are.  By the time I think about it, and talk about it, you have probably already built one or two or three.  This shop is a model of efficiency and so is the guy running it.  ;)

I have a similar rack. I used 2X4s and 1" dowels then used a hole saw to punch holes for the dowels. Nice, tight fit and like bob, used pipe insulation over the dowel.

Man, Bob, don't you finish anything?    LL~

Well when Bobby said sanding is help needed, that let me out.   Talk to all the local guys in my area.   I do not like finishing airplanes.   Love to build or assemble, depending on the plane.

Wish I could do two or three at once. I have one unfinished plane that I will get back to ... and several that need re-finish.

PVC pipe seems to come in funny sizes, but CPVC (the yellow stuff) comes in 1 1/8" diameter.  I have a Forstner bit that diameter.  Gorilla Glue holds CPVC to particle board nicely.

PVC pipe comes in iron pipe sizes and CPVC in copper pipe sizes.
